there are definitely downsides to the nuclear block but the reason I keep coming back to it as necessary and good is that it completely ruined the whole MAGA engagement model to the point that they prefer to mock us from the nazi bar rather than come here to troll us directly

Now is a good reminder that machine learning is a rebranding of statistical learning. Reinforcement learning is something I first came across in control theory. Many ML formulations are from information theory, a much more theoretically grounded discipline that's been around for decades.

It's that people see them reading and writing and reasoning and scheming and they realize that the stochastic-parrots framing is outdated and inadequate to the moment
When I’m called on to explain LLMs, I almost always start with “so once upon a time thereabouts in the era of WW2, there was a guy called Claude Shannon…” who is far more fun to talk about than sam altman or whatever, but it also guarantees whoever I’m talking to will never ask me about LLMs again
