Also a huge amount of energy is wasted just moving fuel around.
An import point that most people don’t fully grasp. Generating electricity from renewables like solar and wind eliminates this wasted energy. We can deliver more energy services with vastly lower primary energy consumption.
Like, Prof. Ally-the-Raptor is all set up to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts but then they bring out the statement she has to sign and she walks because hey - look, when we were in a single-sex environment, Steve decided to make a change and she's not selling him out like that.
It’s worth noting that Taco Bell identified the source before the FDA did, and promptly pulled it from their stores. The FDA didn’t even name the source until Taylor Farms outed themselves, and hasn’t issued a recall. Basically, Taco Bell is now a more reliable authority than the FDA.
Taylor Farms, which supplies major fast food and grocery chains, was identified as the possible source of the cyclosporiasis outbreak Thursday.
maybe it's not woke to say so but these bog people from the northern barbarian mists simply should not be depicting a civilized race like the greeks
15yo: people are saying that Lupita Nyong’o shouldn’t be in The Odyssey because she doesn’t have the right look. Like, for racist reasons. So now I tell people that I’m not going to watch the movie because Matt Damon and Tom Holland look too pasty and non-Greek. It can go both ways!!!
Remember, free market efficiency means "Sure, we can cut that corner. Who's it gonna hurt?" The purpose of government regulation is to save lives. Most are written in blood, funerals, or misery. The deregulatory urge is one of annoyance at checking for melamine or sewage in baby formula.
Ok. As promised, a thread about supply chain food safety vulnerabilities in the food industry. Buckle up. It's a long one.
Code red AQ, visibly hazy, and people are out mowing their lawns with gas-powered equipment. This is about five levels of screwed-up prioritization.

Holy Spirit as pear-shaped pigeon!!
I was on a exhibition of gothic paintings, and then I saw this.
I have heard this outbreak is being caused by Taylor Farms lettuce used at Taco Bell, but considering their lettuce is at Costco and Kroger and Walmart and Target and Safeway and Albertsons and Whole Foods (and other fast food chains) for now let us just avoid lettuce.
Say it again. This is Taylor Farms' second Cyclospora outbreak, the first being in 2013. They've also had two E. coli outbreaks, one in 2015 and another in 2024.
Taylor Farms is the culprit here, not Taco Bell. Don't buy anything produced by Taylor Farms.
I genuinely don't know why this campaign is stalled under $2k. A great lineup of writers and artists, the book is gorgeous, it's almost complete, and it supports up-and-coming creatives as well as a small indie press! These are the kind of projects we NEED to fund. 10 days left, let's go!!
We haven't given up! Help us by pledging, but if you can't sharing with others is also extremely helpful! www.kickstarter.com/projects/wil...
...new version in which Odysses keeps making nonsense noises at cats?
I am once again begging Hollywood to stop using the Greek alphabet for an Ancient World movie, if they can't afford to even throw a couple of quid at anyone with an inkling of the language. Unless they really think audiences are dying to see THS THDPSSSSPS
Monte Testaccio is a hill in Rome entirely made out of ancient Roman trash! It is composed of carefully piled up terracota shards from about 53 million amphorae. Most of them were used to store olive oil. It is close to the River Tiber, near the Horrea Galbae, ancient warehouses for imported goods.
This is a very thorough and very informative article about air purifiers and air quality. www.cnet.com/home/kitchen...
The Unfiltered Truth: What Air Purifiers Actually Catch
I connected with experts to find out where our air quality is headed, and if air purifiers are the breath of fresh air we need.

Suspect I'd feel the same level of eyeroll about whatever this is reacting to, but also thinking about the way I spent a couple decades feeling like SF was all Cold War hot takes, despite actually knowing better; sometimes it's just finding the right micro-genres to find your path in.
:deep sigh: I see we are again doing "[romantasy] gives women an access point to fantasy, a traditionally male-heavy genre, both in authorship and fandom," as if there have not been women reading and writing fantasy for literal decades
I had this as "Cambric tea" when I was sick as a kid (ginger optional)-- here we tend to go for teas called things like "throat coat" or "throat soother" b/c everyone likes the licorice notes, but always good to remember the basics in case your run out of teabags!
Whisking honey, lemon juice, and ginger (fresh is great, powdered will do) into boiling water and (letting cool to a safe drinking temperature and) drinking will not do anything for your lungs on apocalyptic smoke days, but it's good for your throat. Hang in there, neighbors.
I keep looking at the US today and wondering what the heck everyone else was studying when I had Teapot Dome and The Jungle in 7th grade....
The reason historians often talk about terrible things in survey classes is to get students to recognize either a) how people overcame them such that they’re no longer an everyday concern or b) that they’re still ongoing. The tragedy is watching (a) become (b) in, for instance, food safety.
Excessive LOLOLOLOL AI isn't like moving from horse + cart to a Ferrari It's moving into a palanquin: inefficient, a sign of conspicuous consumption from pretentious asshats, movement at the expense of and carried upon the pained backs of stolen/uncompensated labour mostly in the global South
George Lucas likens AI sceptics to luddites clinging to horses and carts
ugh this season's screenwriters have zero subtlety. "How can we show that they want to burn the country down around our ears?" "dw boss I'm on it"
Beneath the Lincoln Memorial, another potential disaster is brewing for the Park Service. #archives #HistoricalDocuments
Also "what would Homer say if he saw this movie!" First of all, we don't know if Homer was even a real person, or an amalgamation of poets instead. And secondly, in the stories about Homer that we have, he was famously blind.
I inherited my grandmother's tobacco allergy, and continue to be incredibly grateful I live in a time & part of the world where I can safely go do things in public places without having to worry about it.
are young people today aware that there was an active effort 20-25 years ago to stop depicting smoking as cool and glamorous because people got tired of watching their loved ones die of cancer and heart disease from something preventable? seems like classic history repeating itself stuff
