The future looms as a bleak and frightening possibility.

If you believe this, and I hope you do, there is nothing stopping you from continuing to protect your vulnerable neighbors by wearing masks in crowded and indoor spaces, especially necessary spaces like healthcare facilities, grocery stores, and public transportation. Absolutely nothing.

Covid lockdowns demonstrated, in a deeply imperfect way, the possibility of large-scale social solidarity for a higher cause. That is a prime reason why so many powerful people want us to run screaming away from them into the comforting arms of selfish individualist competition.

Another periodic reminder that hot people mask because protecting yourself, your loved ones, and your community is hot as fuck. I am the luckiest to get to love @malyndae.bsky.social, who is kind, hilarious, and fierce about protecting those she loves. Be hot. Wear a mask.

Photo of two people wearing 3M aura N95s in a museum with marble arches and a chandelier behind us. I’m on the left wearing a blue and white checked picnic table shirt and stoggles. I’m white with brown hair. Malynda is next to me looking gorgeous wearing a grey and white striped dress. She’s white with blonde hair and has a gorgeous blue tattoo on her left arm.

This is another semi-regular reminder that hot people mask (I mean, look at @malyndae.bsky.social 😍) because masking is love and resistance and anti-fascist. Masking is community care, and community care is radical in this age. Be hot. Wear a mask.

Recording the hidden River Fleet, one of London’s 20 ghost rivers, flowing beneath streets built over it. Lowering my recorder into a drain, the river suddenly roared to life, a reminder that nature persists, even when we've buried it beneath concrete. Listening closely to hear what it has to say.

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

July 30, 762 CE: The founding of Baghdad. The date and topography of the city were determined by astrologers & architects hired by the Abbasid caliph Al-Mansur, thus the city itself has a horoscope (such a Leo). 🌟 Read Ali Olomi’s essay on this (edited by myself and Stephanie Wong for Public Books).

Baghdad: The Once and Future City of Stars - Public Books

The city testifies to the vast intellectual curiosity of medieval Muslims, and the splendor they translated from astrology into their designs.

Make stuff. Do your hobbies. Geek out with your weird friends. Practice arts and crafts. Every society that ever burned to the ground left behind only the handicrafts, and every society saved from the brink was saved only by arts. Do not give up the joy of creating.
