In recent weeks, there has been a remarkable surge in large, intense, fast-moving, and unfortunately in many cases destructive/deadly wildfires in multiple Northern Hemisphere regions spanning a wide range of climates & ecologies, but they all share one key commonality. [Thread]

This summer has made it abundantly clear that we need rewetting across all landscapes, varied habitats, firebreaks and a recalibration of what we use water for, and in ireland, a massive growth and restoration of our degraded ecosystems like bog and wet woodlands that are naturally fire resistant

New preprint w/ Leo Tiokhin & @lakens.bsky.social! Registered Reports (RRs) are great for science b/c publication is guaranteed before results are known, reducing publication bias & QRPs. I learnt today of the death of Dr Hannah J Block (@hjblock.bsky.social) a brilliant scientist whose work I've always enjoyed. Block's lab produced high quality, honest, careful work without spin or exaggeration, negative results as carefully reported as positive. A real loss to neuroscience 🧠❤️

Episode #370 of the amazing @outrageoptimism.bsky.social #climate podcast begins so starkly: Is it over? As the UK enters its wildfire season, as thousands die of extreme heat, as nations burn each others' oil as tech bros take all our 💲 & our water... 😢 www.outrageandoptimism.org/episodes/is-...
