The lack of funding is absolutely the driving problem here. Everything is secondary, by a very large margin. ARC needs to be funded 3 times more than it is now. Anything less is just not serious.

The regulations that give teeth to the National Historic Preservation Act are about to get wiped out. "Section 106" is what requires pipelines and roads to get checked for impact on archaeology. It's also the basis for federal consultation with Tribes on projects. And it's getting DOGEd this week.

Hence our dismal conclusion: rather than finding that LLMs free us to do a better job of what we were doing before they came along, they shift scientific incentives (and the playing field of academic competition) in ways that compel us to do more and more, faster and faster, less and less well.

Some humanities (*cough cough* archaeology) can be quite expensive actually, but we stand in solidarity with our sibling disciplines. The STEM/HASS divide has done so much harm to our sense of community and shared struggle. The real divide (as ever) is labour/management.

Great to see the Guardian champion the SHAPE (Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences) subjects, but this piece gives impression that they are expensive, whereas many are 'cheap to teach' subjects subsidising more expensive subjects, mainly in STEM and medicine. The crisis demands better understanding.

The non-archaeological community needs to know the administration is gutting the law that preserves historical sites for the benefit of the nation, weakening the voices of tribes in the process. While it may be a fait accompli commenting will provide future lawsuits with material to fight back.

They have betrayed all committments to an established timeline or collaboration with preservation partners. The proposed changes subordinate NHPA to NEPA;

good article and, crucially, a good list at the end of cookware/kitchenware lines that are still quality (and family owned)
