Is it worth getting one of the new base Mac Mini (M6, 16 GiB RAM, 256 GiB SSD) units, or should I bump some specs? I'll mainly be using it for Rust and embedded development. I don't really care about local LLM/agentic coding.

I really wish I didn't have to wait 4-6 months for my Microduck to ship, but it's really awesome so many people have ordered one. I'm expecting there to be a pretty big and vibrant community. Stoked to share my journey! 🦆

The only problem with the Microduck from Pollen Robotics (aka. @hf.co) is the extremely long shipping timeframe. I'm not getting mine until sometime next year 😢

I'm going to @rustlab.it again this year! This will be my third year in a row attending my favorite conference ever. I've been lucky enough to attend a lot of dev conferences all over the world, including the very first NDC, but RustLab is my favorite. If you see me there, say hello! 🙂

I'm currently trying to come up with a reasonable design for a kind of "transaction log" or "delta set" for tracking and replaying mutations of system state. Perhaps some kind of combo of a WAL and git commits. We've got a lot of complex state mutations that we want to be able to replay/debug.

Does anyone on here have any experiences to share about the Fairphone, specifically the 6 or 6 plus? I'm growing increasingly eager to disconnect myself from Big Tech, and looking for a phone that I can repair myself. Share both good and bad. Feel free to share other phone recommendations as well.

I'm looking for a really tiny USB-C drive with at least 8 GiB of storage, or at least enough for a functional Tails setup. Does anyone have any recommendations? I've found plenty of USB-A drives, including those pretty cool bracelets. However, I really want USB-C.

Any decent SDRs that are capable of receiving and transmitting over UHF, VHF and HF? Ideally I want something portable or at least semi-portable. Full kit is a bonus, but not required; I can provide my own antennas.

I wanna do one last startup before I get too old. I've got tons of ideas, but none feel viable long term. I don't want to just start something and then sell out. I wanna nurture something and make it live on long after I retire (30 years from now). Maybe I'll just get go into woodworking instead 🙂

#jj-vcs interoperability with Git continues to be key. The fact that ERSC can swap out the repo storage to not use Git, *and* can have a migration path to a future, better wire protocol than Git's, while preserving compatibility along the way, is amazing!

I missed the RustConf sessions yesterday. What were the most enjoyable or inspiring ones you watched?

I'm feeling burned out and disillusioned. I've got so many ideas I want to put out into the world, but I never manage to find the energy to do it. Something needs to change. Ideas are worthless, execution is everything.

I'm glad to see Rust become a "tier 1" language at Microsoft. Personally, I hope this means more folks actively working on the Azure SDK crates. Those crates have come a long way in the past year, which is great, but we're still missing important support like Azure Service Bus.

I've been "slightly" too ambitious on a passion project involving Rust and ESP32-C3 SoCs. I started to develop my own barebones OS, but I've realized I need to pivot to Embassy. My OS kinda works, but I don't really need an OS. Also, I'm brand new to RISC-V, so everything is 10x harder.

Steve Jobs never would have signed off on this nonsense. I was hoping so long that the iPhone Duo rumors were false. Nah, this is not the Apple I used to respect and admire. It makes me sad.

The single biggest issue with the iPhone Duo, besides possible hinge issues, is that the folding screen needs to be plastic in order to bend. Plastic screens are terrible when compared to the glass screens we've grown accustomed to.

Here we go; the iPhone Duo coming up. I'm skeptical.
