You can only worry about your audience so much because if you truly cared about reaching the masses you would have chosen something other than writing a novel.

RJ Palmer 🔜 Dragon Con@rj-palmer.com · 4mo agoThe way profit maxxing corpo culture has invaded every form of art through algorithms pushing people into daily posting is really weighing on me lately. Efficiency and regularity of making "content" being prized above all else feels so grim, man.
If somebody came to one of my writing classes with a novel about a “24-year-old wunderkind” on Wall Street called Leopold Aschenbrenner who graduated from Columbia aged 19, looked and dressed exactly like this, and crashed the stock market, I’d advise them to tone it down a bit

I remember someone comparing it to the gym. It's more efficient to move large amounts of weight with a forklift truck than a human being, but the point of going to the gym isn't that the weight is moved, it's that YOU learn to move the weight.

Pan's Labyrinth. Quite a lot of people latched on to the whole dark fairy tale thing in the trailer, and so THAT scene (bottle, teeth) in the first ten minutes chased a lot of folks out.

Still working my way as slowly as possible through Elizabeth McCracken’s A Long Game. It’s a wonderful craft book, as delightfully aphoristic as it is usefully practical.
A Long Game is a great book about writing in part because it’s made up of great writing. Is this not one of the best metaphors for novel writing you’ve ever read? It comes a few pages after McCracken has described how she experiences great metaphors: “neurological, not analytical.” And here it is!
