The one that kills me is people giving speeches about someone (birthdays, farewells, retirement) and thinking it’s funny to say, ‘So just for fun I asked ChatGPT about x, and it came up with . . . ‘—as if that’s not really using it. Appalling and needs to be called out.

My new litmus test in social situations with people I don’t know is now whether they use LLMs. The moment a person says ‘so I asked ChatGTP’, I’m fucking out of there. My wife is getting a bit pissed off, admittedly, but I just can’t.

Suddenly getting lots of follows from 'script festivals' who are keen on people paying them to read their material and 'consider' it, awww that's nice of them. Reminded: money is supposed to flow *towards* the writer, not away from.

also access journalism generally sucks and is conflated with accountability journalism and if I'm honest you don't really need access to the principal to hold them to account; release a story that causes a massive fucking stink and they'll respond anyway

I cannot rest from discourse. I will see that film again tomorrow. I will drink life to the lees. Again I will enjoy greatly, will suffer greatly, both with those that love me, and in Pleasantville NY. I am become a meme. Film showing: burnsfilmcenter.org/booking/the-...

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

An aircraft passenger oxygen mask: a drop down passenger mask with air bag and yellow plastic mouth and nose cover, oxygen tube has been cut; Demonstration model used by flight attendant crew for passenger instruction. Has text on the side indicating that it's non-functional.

On avoiding AI. Seconded here. I now use LibreOffice rather than word. I still have Office365, as I have found some (very few) functionalities are better. BUT before I moved to Libre, I disabled Copilot across the whole set of programmes, as across my desktop.

I’m probably further down that road than most - I’ve basically put together a non-Microsoft, non-Apple, non-Google software environment to write my next book in, in part so I can say clearly that I’ve routed around AI, and I couldn’t *prove* non-use.

I maintain that if Burnham made it legal to confiscate phones from people who watch video or listen to music without headphones, then called a snap election, he could actually increase his majority.

Historians! What should I read on why France was so late to women's suffrage? And in particular, on why the First World War didn't have the same accelerating effect as in Britain? (Ideally in English, but French not impossible...)

Hmmm. I read the Emily Wilson review of Nolan's The Odyssey and not sure what the hubbub is about. Are negative reviews not allowed anymore? Some nuance of her points seems flattened in the criticisms of the review, too.
