Ngāpuhi, Prof of Māori health, surprised terminal cancer survivor - 3 years so far. Toitū te Tiriti, equity etc etc. My memoir, Ngākaurua, is coming out in 2026 via Cuba Press - woohoo!

I forgot to pick up my chemo script yesterday for the first time. I'm supposed to have already had my first dose of this cycle. As an organised person, I have to believe that my subconscious had its wicked way with my brain. Off to the chemist now - at least it's a pretty day for a walk!

"They said they were 'going to have a plan', they didn't do any work on a plan. They said they 'had a plan', they did not have a plan. . . Never seen anything like it." "we don't believe that they are honest and truthful" www.rnz.co.nz/news/te-ao-m...

Waitangi Tribunal finds Crown had no clear plan for Māori health after scrapping Te Aka Whai Ora

The Waitangi Tribunal has found the Government had no clear alternative plan for Māori health when it scrapped Te Aka Whai Ora - the Māori Health Authority.

The careful language in the report is understating the issue. This govt has taken purposeful steps to deepen our health inequities and remove as many remedial options as they can. It's the same colonial violence enacted across the centuries, with the same intent - erasure.

Disgraceful. Untrustworthy www.rnz.co.nz/national/pro... "a damning report into the Crown's alternative plans for Maori health, in lieu of a Maori Health Authority. The Tribunal found that the Crown's alternative plans breached the Treaty by failing to take meaningful action towards Maori health"

Learning what it means to live in the 'long middle' btw diagnosis & dying means I'm also learning abt chronic illness. One night in Akl & I was so tired I was shaking & staggering like I was drunk at the airport! My brain keeps going 'wtaf, body?'. Surreal & not fun - but also weirdly interesting 🤷

Trivia, but I've just had my first experience of a robot doing room service! But my room has NO DESK wtaf?? I'm kneeling on the floor using the bed right now. Plus not enough p.points to charge watch, phone & hearing aids overnight. Two on the wall furthest from the bed w no table to sit things on.

Grateful for all of you who are reading & sharing info from the book. My self care means I don't read things that make me feel sick, so I'm relieved to be able to absorb the gist of it in small bites and at a slow pace.

Travelling again today, this time for a BoT hui that has taken weeks of intense preparation. I think the agenda is both doable & covers everything ... Chairing is not a job for the faint hearted 🥴. Home tomorrow night & will be shattered again. Sigh 😮‍💨

Rewatching West Wing & head spinning bc of the sexism, racism & smug whiteness but also it's really good TV. I used to love Josh - now I just think he's just a wanker who rose bc of his bullying smartassery. We need a contemporary version.

A very quiet weekend - got up late, napped for a couple of hours each day (Fri-Sun) & slept ok at night. It's taken 4 days to recover from being away from home for 36 hours. I'm doing it again next week 😣

We need a new word for that feeling that surpasses exhaustion and incorporates nausea, dizziness, chemo brain, muscle weakness and extreme regret that I chose to travel this week.

Randomly rediscovered this paper yesterday- a tohu I suspect, a reminder that chemo isn't everything. "To refuse to be defined by an illness is not an act of denial; it is a refusal to let medical terminology be the only language spoken in the house of your soul." www.theguardian.com/society/2026...

I have stage four cancer – there will be no cure, but death isn’t necessarily imminent: this is how it feels to live in the long middle

When you are cured, the world cheers; when you are dying, it mourns. But when you are simply maintaining, the world is at a loss

Story in the Herald this am about nursing levels across all areas & shifts. It's horrifying to read how many shifts are understaffed, but made worse by realising HNZ staffing goals are already under safe levels. Even if each shift was 100% covered, care would still be compromised by those numbers.

Thank fuck for people like Chris 👇. There are so many layers of terrible in there - clinical, personal/patient & whānau, staffing, accessibility, infrastructure, finances ... after all the work being done to bring treatments closer to home for cancer patients ... ACT wankery.

there was a raft of ways to invest in cancer care, that should be prioritised over a large cancer hospital. New Zealand needed a structure that enabled people to receive cancer treatment close to home. "Centralising care in one or two places for all cancers, is ... a crazy idea, really." #nzpol

For whānau Māori only (last time I tried asking this I got whitesplained in a multi-post thread). How are you feeling about the split vote of TPM candidate + different party vote? The white backlash makes me think it's actually a pretty powerful choice.
