From what I've seen, this is more AI hype (and for some academics, grabbing huge amounts of grant money with both hands) than anything else. AI companies are desperate to keep the bubble going, and reliant on a mix of utopian and doomer hyperbole about what they *will* do, never what they can do.

FWIW conceptualizing "the human as the bottleneck” is also a leading argument behind the use of algorithmic targeting systems, which also rejects “input from humanity.”

Is this for real? It reads like an addict asking if you can get through the day without P (meth). If you're not on P, the answer is, "I'm not on P." I'm increasingly worried for the people who are hooked: when the bubble bursts they won't be able to get their supply for less than cost anymore.

"There Will Come Soft Rains" was integrated into Bradbury's Martian Chronicles, and it has been a favourite of mine since I read it in grade school. It's an oddly hopeful story, but it's hopeful for life and the Earth, not for humankind.

For context, I'm completely opposed to the death penalty because I'm completely opposed to lethal state violence. But someone saying that someone should be tried for their crimes and saying that those crimes are a capital (i.e. death penalty) offence is not cause for a ban.
