If you're wondering what the actual crux of the article is, it's this. "The administration regularly sends the influencers memos on the mayor’s priorities" The mayor sends out press releases... That's it. That's where taxpayer money is going supposedly. On writing press releases. How terrible.

It takes you 20 paragraphs to get to the part of the article where they admit that Mamdani isn't paying the influencers and the reason they are posting videos of the stuff Mamdani is doing is because people are interested in watching it.

The mayor’s office says that it does not pay the influencers. Still, their proximity and access to a figure as popular as Mr. Mamdani can help increase their own social media following and, by extension, potentially put them in a position to attract paid content sponsorships from commercial brands. Some influencers said that when they feature Mr. Mamdani, the videos get more likes and viewers watch longer.

"Mr. Mamdani is a master of new media... But as mayor, he has also been able to use taxpayer funds to create a sprawling network of hundreds of friendly influencers to boost his priorities, provide positive depictions of his administration and enhance his popularity."

Given the ominous reference to taxpayer funds, I expected what we usually see (& what I saw when I was going after public corruption): 1. Dodgy payments to outside media consultants for unclear services 2. Fake, no-show jobs for influencers 3. Bags of money to bribe journos None of that is here!

Every. day. Everyday one of these ICE charter planes has to abort takeoff, or do an emergency return, or has a decompression, or gets stuck somewhere for 20+ hours with shackled immigrant passengers trapped onboard. And we never find out why. There is no transparency.
