The new academic year starts in 2 months. The modules to run are set in stone even if the all-new first year ones haven’t yet been designed. All that remains is to decide which 3 of the 23 of us will still be here to teach them. The redundancy selection criteria has not yet been announced…

Leaving aside that many teaching contracts are fixed-term and ppl aren’t around long enough for promotion, these are impossible metrics. What employers actually want is the ability to carry a heavy teaching load and to teach things outside your field without fuss. Hard to innovate in that context!

You haven't really lived in Birmingham until you've experienced the terror of someone driving full speed right at you as you walk down the pavement, so they can bump their car or van up the curb to park. Sometimes you can register the momentary shock on their faces when they finally notice you.

Selfish parking is a blight on Brum. I had a run in with a driver yesterday who objected to the fact I banged on her car to alert her to the fact there were pedestrians on the pavement she'd driven over & parked on blocking our way. As she parked on a junction I took pics & reported to next base 🤷‍♀️

Really hate to have to say this but it sure feels like "Labour was CHISELLED out of the MINES... FORGED in the FACTORIES" etc. (that guy is my actual MP!) is a lot more about gender and whiteness than it is about class.

I was going to call this era “the long nineteenth century” but it might just be “modernity.” When that category no longer enticed and attracted, little was left for a World’s Fair to display. 1851-1986. A good run and a momentous era, now 40 years in the past.

My dad just noted that my grandparents (from Louisville) were married on this day in 1939 - and then went to the 1939 World’s Fair in NY. In 1962, dad and grandma came to Seattle for the World’s fair. In 1986, dad took my brother and I to Vancouver for the Worlds Fair there. All three by train.
