Here's voice actor David Wald sharing how at the height of lockdown during a pandemic, Crunchyroll banned remote recording in an effort to union bust and also made it nearly impossible for him to work due to refusing to offer medical accommodations in studio.

David Wald tweets: Lots of talk about the death of remote recording lately so here’s my 2 cents. I worked for a big dubbing co (IYKYK) for almost 20 years. At the height of lockdown, that co banned remote recording. If you couldn’t come into their studio, you were not cast in new projects. (1/8) I’ve had type 1 diabetes since age 9. That’s an auto-immune disease. This makes me very vulnerable to all kinds of illnesses. A recording booth is an enclosed space full of someone else’s fresh spit with zero ventilation. (2/8) So when there’s a new, not yet understood respiratory disease floating around as there was back then, any doctor will tell you to avoid exposure as much as possible, as mine did. So I stayed home. (3/8) Over the course of the following 2 years, I wrote 20 or so emails to the HR dept and the producers at that co, BEGGING for a medical accommodation. I did not receive a single reply. Then they removed me from the audition list. (4/8)After 2 years, broke and desperate, I had no choice but to return to in-person recording. Shortly after, I got the Dreaded Illness and had to stay home. They tried to bully me into coming in while I was still sick. (5/8) It should be noted that my roommate at the time also had The Illness and was bullied into coming in anyway. Someone they KNEW was sick, and forced to come to the studio, as they tried to do with me. (6/8) It should also be noted that when you walk into this studio, the booth schedule is on monitors all over the place, and there were remote sessions all over it every time I went in. Yet, AFAIK, not a single person ever received a medical accommodation. (7/8) So what’s the lesson? If you really want in to the dubbing business, bypass the non-union stuff. Join the union and only do union work. Have someone in your corner, fighting for your most basic human rights, or you might get crunched like I did.A user named Jodie asks: So not only did they make a conscious decision to ban remote sessions (when they were allowed before?), they actively restarted them 2 years later but continued to deny you, and potentially others, on medical grounds? One of the main reasons to accommodate remote working? 💀 David Wald replies: IMHO, the ban was purely a veiled effort at union-busting. You’ll notice the ban came after some very public unionization talk from out-of-state VAs who were making some very excellent points about the need for unionization. Shut them right down. Coincidence? 🤷‍♂️
