up too late reading how CRY color was done on the atari jaguar. it's weird but TLDR; an 8-bit color lookup value and an 8-bit intensity. it stores intensity separately because that made it easy to do gouraud shading (you just interpolate Y between vertices.) at the end you do color * Y.
