Just thinking about the Amyciaea crab spider. I don't generally think of spiders as evil, but this thing is an empathy predator. It lurks alongside weaver ant colonies, pretending to be an injured ant, and when gullible ants go to help out what they think is their sister, they get eaten.

A cute little reticulated beetle, Tenomerga cinerea. This odd lineage last shared an ancestor with more typical beetles like ladybirds and scarabs nearly 300 million years ago.

New preprint: a phylogenomic tree of Elateriformia (fireflies, click, jewel, soldier beetles and relatives). 195 taxa, 31 of 34 families, up to ~4,200 genes. The group goes back ~285 Mya, and soft bodies and neotenic females evolved independently at least 15 times. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
🧬 It has been revealed that high-quality DNA can be recovered from arthropod specimens preserved in formalin for decades, opening new possibilities for evolutionary research using natural history collections. ➡️ Read the full study: doi.org/10.3897/nhcm.3.200681 @uni-kiel.de @leibnizlib.bsky.social
I became a biologist because of a museum exhibit. Real artifacts tell stories that are more powerful than anything we can get from scrolling. They are part of our engine for training the next generation of scientists. 🧪 scienceforeveryone.science/the-awesomen...

Abstract. Large phylogenetic trees are often unbalanced near the root, with a species-depauperate lineage sister to a far more species-rich clade. The spec
