Boots theory is an elegant metaphor by a brilliant writer. It’s not an economics paper, but — within the imagined world of Ankh Morpork — it evokes a truth: being forced to buy cheap goods is more expensive in the long run. Hooting that it doesn’t apply to *boots* in our reality is crushingly dim.
Yeah, for days people have been citing “boots theory” at me and I want to shout DO YOU REALIZE THIS IS A RANDOM IDEA TOSSED OUT BY A FANTASY WRITER AND MAY NOT ACCURATELY DESCRIBE REALITY

Many people outside the UK have been asking me who Rod Liddle was. Here's Stewart Lee (from 08:53 onwards) on the man described by Fraser Nelson (former editor of The Spectator) as 'the greatest satirist since Swift.' Let this be the last word on the subject. www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFt3...

This. So much this! I read the Lord of the Rings when I was 11yrs old and mostly made up the pronunciations of names and places myself that felt right in my head and enjoyed the story. Nothing was lost. The films certainly helped correct that later. No shame in reading. No shaming of readers.
Be cautious about criticising someone for mispronouncing a word - it is usually because they learned the word by reading.
til that herb butter was named after its inventor, Sir Herbert Butter-Knife in 1851. That it coincidentally contains both herbs and butter is just one of those wonderful happy accidents.
Listening to that gorgeous John Williams score for Jurassic Park. Now, I love Nick Mohammed dearly. I really, really do, but Mr Swallow has rendered it impossible to hear the opening notes without going "Oh No, What's THAT?" "Where?" "OVER THERE"

It's less irritating than music on the train but to cycle back to "where did courtesy go?" Groups that walk towards you in a flat line and don't try to squeeze over, are you trying to make me fall in the canal?

Cool use case of chatgpt I just heard. Connect to your parent's medical records and hospice website API, and supply a list of relative's names and some key milestones. Chatgpt will then generate comforting words for them in their final hours. A real time saver.
