More than half of young adult women who grew up as Latter-day Saints have now left the church. Many are reacting against politics, purity culture and powerlessness.
Jana Riess: Why are so many young women leaving the LDS Church?

Beginning to feel like I need to budget a week on the blog for a military primer on 'how the US Navy is the load-bearing pillar of your ability to eat bananas and of folks in developing countries to eat at all.' Not saying that is an optimal situation, merely that it is the situation.
El-Sayed: "Once a government agency like ICE is told it has impunity to do the worst things and violate the highest law of the land, which is the Constitution itself, I don't think you can reform or retrain. I think we need to start from scratch ... I think we need to abolish it."
Yes, America has two major political parties, and one of them supports violent attacks on America, believing that seditious conspiracy should be covered up or celebrated. It’s… not great.
The majority of Republicans in Congress voted against confirming Biden’s election, making them in effect the insurrectionary party. The party should change its name.
The Jan. 6 attackers’ victory looks short lived. They got an anti-Constitution leader and their criminal convictions undone (though some got arrested for new offenses). But Team Trump’s failing at authoritarian consolidation. Still, they won. Some got jobs in a new secret police. It’s awfully dark.
A paramilitary group plotted to overthrow the Constitution then conducted a violent attack on America. They were convicted in court of seditious conspiracy, and jailed. Then the leader they aimed to illegally install got power and let them out, their records wiped clean. The Jan. 6 attackers won.
Judge Pained as He Grants Dismissal of Jan. 6 Charges Against Oath Keepers
The judge, Amit P. Mehta, blasted the administration’s request for a dismissal in the case, saying it bestowed “unearned grace” on the Oath Keepers defendants “by wiping their records clean.”

El-Sayed, Lawrence and McKinney all won progressive campaigns in Michigan last night by talking about climate and clean energy like it was a kitchen-table issue — because skyrocketing energy bills and endless wildfire smoke matter to people.
This couple came legally. They applied for asylum before their visas expired, wanting to do it all by the books. After six months, they applied for work permits to stay afloat, passing background checks. They worked legally and paid taxes while government delay dragged on. Then ICE came for them.
The couple’s arrest outside Midway Airport aligns with what immigration attorneys across the country have observed in recent months: an increase in ICE arrests at airports of people traveling domestically with expired visas but pending immigration cases. www.chicagotribune.com/2026/08/05/c...
I seem unusual among UK trans journalists in that I have a regular publication. That's because I write about tech, if I wrote about politics or trans stuff I would be excluded like all the other trans voices. A whole generation of very bright talent, extinguished. Editors should be ashamed.
This is what happened 5-10 years ago in the UK. Journalistic seriousness was stripped from trans journalists and columnists despite trans topics dominating headlines.
Trans film and arts critics have also done okay and for the most part trans columnists in apolitical "lifestyle" content seem to have been less affected. It's capital N News coverage and Political Comment journalism where trans people were purged most rigourously.

Strongly encourage the GOP to run with "just cook at home you stupid poors" as their general election message
for reasons that only make sense if you're insane, a TPUSA kid complaining about burrito costs on xitter has the GOP's biggest divas going for each other's throats.

I need people to understand that for the last half decade that there’s been an ecosystem of trans folks in sports media who have worked unpaid to serve as experts for context, sources and educators on what it’s like for trans athletes, in hopes of potential bylines and contacts. That’s dried up.
I hate sounding like a conspiracy person but there’s a reason that this Sophie Cunningham thing is on like day 7 of discourse and how there’s absolutely very little trans staff writers driving the news coverage of it.
It’s true, in the past I would have had multiple editors in my inbox asking me to write about the Cunningham stuff. I haven’t gotten a single assignment request. Trans writers used to be tokenized to write about these things but now that the topic is “mainstream,” those bylines go elsewhere.

I pitched both of my usual outlets about the Cunningham stuff, one said yes, one said not right now. In 2019 I would have had a dozen editors competing for my words on this.

And I worry that there are a lot of people on the left who don't care about this problem because they hate AI. But the truth is that as this technology continues to get jammed into everything from customer service to banking to fast food orders, having built-in fair right bias is bad.
Basically the worst case scenario for AI use. All knowledge is now gated by a bigoted machine controlled by wealthy bigoted elites.
It's really not good that the government is trying to force AI companies to make their LLM chatbots "anti-woke" (biased in favor of the right).
The Heritage Foundation asserts that women never needed sports in the first place. To prove that Title IX has become a tool of “feminist social engineering.” To demonstrate that women don’t need sports and that “clubs, intramurals, and exercise classes” is enough. open.substack.com/pub/jesspipe...

Whenever one of these freaks goes off on a tangent about their trans conspiracy of the day, the proper response -- from an interviewer or anyone else -- is "well, it seems like you're having some sort of mental breakdown here, so we'll wrap it up"
Royce White is now ranting about "transgender sex dolls" during a forum that is supposed to be about agricultural issues. This guy is a serious Republican in Minnesota who had the party's nomination for a Senate seat two years ago. Insanity.
RFK Jr's CDC reportedly scaled back foodborne disease tracking last year, removing cyclospora from mandatory reporting. The CDC also lost roughly 3,000 employees since 2025. Now a cyclosporiasis outbreak has killed 2 and sickened thousands across 45 states. "Make America Healthy Again."
That they have the gall to complain about burrito prices while putting immigrants into concentration camps is infuriating. Hating immigration should get you put on a no-burrito list.

If you're trans and you have the means and opportunity to safely leave the US, you probably should. The best time to get out is likely yesterday.

I don't say this lightly, but if you correctly recognize the anti-trans pogroms and propaganda as the attempted genocide they are, the appropriate response throughout all of history has been to leave before you no longer can. bsky.app/profile/dani...

Trans Couple Brutalized At Louisiana Park Bathroom, Then Charged By Police
An angry mob allegedly beat them. The police charged them. The municipality voted for one of the most severe anti-trans bathroom ordinances in the country.

This is worth amplifying (also this podcast is rad), that Roman slavery was, y'know, slavery. In fact, all slavery is horrifying, but the broader 'Mediterranean' slavery tradition (which is also, by the by, the ancestor of Atlantic slavery) is one of the *more extreme* such traditions.
Next time someone tries to tell you that Roman slavery was different or better than other forms of slavery, tell them to listen to last week’s episode of @thisguysucked.com and/or buy Emma’s book.
