Presumably he's not TRYING to destroy the US, but he sure as hell is. Nor is he TRYING to get the rest of the world to race to clean renewables either—but he sure as hell is. Put the two together, and it's geopolitically precarious, but also full of possibility. If we fight like hell, that is.

Absolutely unbelievable how solar power has taken off worldwide during the Hormuz oil crisis. You don't have to hand it to him, but Trump may have done more to finally kick off a global civilization of effete librul solar users than anyone else in the West

Chart showing solar panel exports from China (the main solar panel maker by a long shot) growing steadily & mightily from 2018 through 2026, then spiking by almost 2x in March 2026.

This is ridiculously scary. Yes, we are currently talking about ballrooms and reflecting pools and inflation and Iran and Venezuela and Epstein and crypto grift and the moral rot of the GOP. But all that is going to be forgotten soon. Shit is about to get real, as they say.

I'm not sure folks have realized just how crazy the second half of 2026 and 2027 will be for global temperatures – on the back of a record-smashing El Niño event. Here is my latest estimate of where both years will end up compared to global temperatures since 1850.

You know what this ISN'T? An LLM. Once more for the folks in the back: nearly all of the actually useful, genuinely promising things that AI can do for us have nothing to do with LLMs & planet-devouring data centers. Hope, not hype. Serving us, not serving us up to Big Tech. @sciam.bsky.social

AI finds hidden ECG signal that predicts sudden cardiac death risk

A new model uses a routine ECG to flag people at high risk of sudden cardiac death—and reveals a warning sign in the heart’s electrical activity

Industrial policy sometimes has "Governments picking winners." But it just as often has "Losers picking Governments" US AI companies losing to open-source Chinese AI companies are likely to go to US govt to create themselves a 'moat'

Peat in its natural state is fire resistant. Healthy boglands protect adjacent forests and grasslands from drought and fire. But under a warming climate and mismanagement, peat fires can wreak havoc and burn for months. Important thread by @davidrvetter.bsky.social

I join you from the Blaenavon wildfire in Southeast Wales, brought to you by BP, Shell and Equinor. Though it does not look dramatic, the fire has been out of control for days - for a very particular reason. 🧵

It's not possible to keep track of climate catastrophes anymore—they slide over our awareness (if we see them at all) & disappear. They used to be sporadic & local, now they're constant & often much larger. The network effects on food supply, migration, etc. will be terrifying, within years.

Ten days of water. That is what is left in northern Italy. Salt from the Adriatic pushing upstream into soil that fed generations. Emergency meetings next week. Crops already turning. We bear witness to a land dying on a timeline measured in days, not decades. phys.org/news/2026-07...

Flip the script so that what's extreme is requiring people to buy a $50,000, dinosaur-juice-burning, 6000-lb machine to take the kids to school or get a gallon of milk... ...while riding a $5,000, 70-lb bike powered by a combo of a trickle of electricity and your own two legs is just normal.

Drought threatens irrigation in northern Italy

Water reserves are being depleted rapidly in northern Italy, threatening farming as the region's main river dries up, local officials warned Friday.

When ICE agents make a stop and a car is left behind, it’s usually towed and impounded. Then fees accumulate and it’s on the family to pay. When Angel Tepale gets the call, he holds the vehicles at his own small lot and tries to find the rightful owners, all for no charge.

people make fun of Sun Tzu for being not terribly profound stuff like "do not needlessly anger your allies before you need them" but you do kinda gotta hand it to the guy, White House would have been well served with someone who knew those things

Holiday in the climate emergency. No that’s not AI or edited, just a snapshot I just took with my phone on Lacanau beach in France. What future will this boy grow up in? It is in our hands, but time is running out.
