“proposed cuts of 28 per cent of staff in the department” of history at Exeter.
And not just Exeter. At least 2 History Leicester FBAs have had to leave the University to stay in the profession due to risk of redundancy, and they won't be the only ones. The much broader issue affects thousands of excellent academics across a spectrum of disciplines (including STEM ones). 1/2
The UK is torching one of the few sectors in which they still have a global edge, horrifying to watch.
Wonderful day on Monday celebrating all our incredible graduates in the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies across our spectrum of degrees from the ancient to the modern. Always an uplifting experience! 🎓 🎉 @universityofleeds.bsky.social @leedsalumni.bsky.social
#femizide
'About 150 academic roles are set to go at the south-west institution, which said it was targeting areas that are “no longer sustainable” or have seen changes in student demand.' History and English are name-checked. 1/3

It’s wild that politicians don’t seem to grasp the degree to which universities contribute to the economy- local, regional, national. The failure to intervene is a stain on this govt - a shocking dereliction of duty to every worker, every local business, every student, every area that is suffering

If Muslims or members of the Asian and Black community had set fire to white people’s homes with children running for their lives, do you think we would be discussing legitimate concerns or focussing on who radicalised them and ideological and contributing cultural factors?
I will buy a subscription to the first mainstream Irish publication that simply states the truth in the headline of a news report that "racist pogroms" took place in Belfast last night and doesn't weasel word it by calling it a "protest" and continues do so
I get the impression that some people aren't clear what this means. This is the UK state deciding to intervene directly in the healthcare of individual children, depriving them of medicine that their doctors have prescribed for their personal health & wellbeing, in defiance of global best practice.
Update: Young people & families today received shocking & transphobic letters from NHS. These letters tell people that endocrine care (blockers / HRT) is being fully withdrawn in 7 weeks time (July 31st). Forced medical detransition. This country is a danger to trans children & young people.
Media: Stop calling the people setting fire to the homes of people of colour in Belfast “protesters”. This is a pogrom.
Even 'race riots' is a euphemism for 'racist riots'.
We used to call them ‘race riots’ now we call them ‘anti-immigration protests’.
UKGOV response to vicars and grannies peacefully holding cardboard signs: “Terrorists! Here’s some new laws to lock ‘em up!” UKGOV response to racist thugs going house-to-house looking for black and brown people to torch: “Legitimate concerns… and we’ll keep posting on the Nazi site.”

das ist so bizarr
Anyone knows how to find English as other language teacher who volunteers to teach English to an Ukrainian refugee? I googled but did not get much further. Thank you!
Alle.
You could set out every single bit of evidence that the MET are institutionally racist (as they were forced to admit), that they are violent enforcers of the state without two brain cells to share between them, etc. and that won’t stop the racist politicians and media from blaming this on ‘DEI’
This episode of "Today" desperately needs a historian of policing, to explain why things like anti-racism training were introduced in the first place. This wasn't some departure from a world in which the police treated everyone the same. It was an attempt to bring that world fractionally closer.
It would take about 30 seconds to remind news audiences of the basic facts of the Stephen Lawrence case
