"There are signs that the Bayes Factor is increasingly taking on a role analogous to that of the p-value, serving as a device for the automation of decisions rather than as a tool for substantive inference." Excellent new preprint by Carol Ting on the rise of NHST. #Methodology #stats

The Rise of Null Hypothesis Significance Testing (NHST): Institutional Massification and the Emergence of a Procedural Epistemology

It has long been a puzzle why, despite sustained reform efforts, many applied scientific fields remain dominated by Null Hypothesis Significance Testing (NHST), a framework that dichotomizes study res...

I refuse to use the term "AI era". It conveys a level of persistence which is unwarranted for an innovation that may very well never become sustainable or economical. Instead I propose the term "AI crisis", given that it's something that wreaks havoc and that nobody has asked for.

These findings echo the debate in adult research raised by Rey-Mermet et al. (2018), suggesting that results based on a single inhibition paradigm cannot be generalised to other paradigms.

We found no support for a unitary inhibition construct. Instead, the stop-signal task (SST) was related to symbolic arithmetic in both 5- and 7-year-olds. In contrast, the flanker task was related to non-symbolic maths, but only in 7-year-olds.

When people use LLMs for medical diagnosis accuracy is below 50%. Strong case against automated benchmarks of LLM โ€˜ability.โ€™ If your uncle canโ€™t use it to diagnose a migraine, it canโ€™t diagnose a migraine. A doctor could, cause she understands what questions to ask. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Reliability of LLMs as medical assistants for the general public: a randomized preregistered study - Nature Medicine

In a randomized controlled study involving 1,298 participants from a general sample, performance of humans when assisted by a large language model (LLM) was sensibly inferior to that of the LLM alone ...

If you think concerns about replicability started in the 2010's, and you don't know this was just a repetition of exactly the same concerns from the 1960's, you are failing to learn from history of science. Dig in: rips-irsp.com/articles/10.... and rips-irsp.com/articles/10....

Many living people carry fragments of Neanderthal DNA, remnants of ancient interbreeding events, with uneven distribution across chromosomes. New work by @sarahtishkoff.bsky.social lab suggests patterns are most consistent with Neanderthal contribution to human populations being highly male biased.๐Ÿงช

Interbreeding between Neanderthals and modern humans was strongly sex biased

Sex biases in admixture and other demographic processes are recurrent features throughout human evolution. For admixture between Neanderthals and anatomically modern humans (AMHs), sex bias has been p...
