In 2024 Oakland implemented a 4 car lane to 1 car lane road diet on 13th St in Downtown using only paint. It’s not perfect but this relatively cheap change has helped a lot w speeding. The perpendicular Webster corridor is the same width & needs a similar update ASAP.

The mayor says something really important about something that's bugged me for a long time: that we force grieving families to relive their trauma over and over again as they lobby elected officials asking them to do the right thing. I am so glad to hear him say those days are over.
"I'm so sorry that we could not have done this earlier...to have saved the loved ones in your life. But I thank you fopr the work that you have done...to ensure that this pain not be felt by others who call this same city home." — Mayor Mamdani at McGuinness Blvd. presser youtube.com/shorts/uwAYI...
Thanks El Cerrito/Richmond Annex Walk & Roll for holding a powerful vigil yesterday for Donna Revecho, who was killed while crossing San Pablo Ave. It was inspiring to join dozens to stand up for safe streets. We need to hold Caltrans accountable to make San Pablo safer & prevent more tragedies!
The plastic posts and speed cushions installed on International Blvd successfully reduced pedestrian deaths to zero by discouraging speeding in the bus-only lanes This intervention saved many of our neighbors lives this year and will continue to save lives into the future Now make it permanent
A new bus-only lane was criticized for years for a design that encouraged illegal speeding. But simple interventions, including bollards, have drastically reduced fatalities.
If pedestrian deaths can be eliminated on the previously deadly International Boulevard, we should be able to eliminate them on every other street. We just need the will to do it, especially from policymakers and Caltrans. Thanks @tvrr.bsky.social for tireless advocacy to achieve this huge win!
For those who haven't been on the boulevard in thew last year, the data alone tells us that there has been a positive transformation: pedestrian deaths fell from 7 in 2023 to 0 so far this year. Yep, zero. More yet to do! @tvrr.bsky.social www.oakrapidresponse.org/posts/intern...
Massive congratulations are owed to the folks at @tvrr.bsky.social for their work on International Boulevard. It is *unquestionable* that their advocacy has saved multiple lives, something not many people can say. Quick 🧵on their blog post. www.oakrapidresponse.org/posts/intern...

“The price paid for these chases is too often paid by community members and bystanders like Dr. Marvin Boomer. We should focus on solutions and interventions that create safer streets through street transformation, not by making our streets battlegrounds.” Justin Hu-Nguyen, @bikeeastbay.bsky.social
“We’re going to hear criticism that you didn’t go far enough and criticism that you’re changing too much,” said the commission chair.

There is no safe way for a cyclist to cross this high volume and high speed intersection We call on OakDOT to prioritize street safety upgrades here and across the city to ensure bicyclists and pedestrians can safely cross the street
Hongmei Chen, a single mother, was killed by a large truck on Telegraph Avenue and 51st Street in Oakland while returning home from work.
I stood on this corner with an eyewitness to the tragedy and went step-by-step through this tragic incident and the below is correct: there is no moment in the light cycle when people on foot or on bikes can cross without conflicts with turning vehicles. So people cannot avoid taking risks.
There is currently no safe way for a cyclist to cross this high volume and high speed intersection We call on @cityofoakland.bsky.social's elected leaders, OPD, OFD, and OakDOT to treat the traffic safety crisis as a public safety crisis and accelerate efforts to make our streets safe for everyone

We know physical interventions will prevent deadly collisions because we've seen those interventions already work wonders It is so very crucial that we install those safety projects without delay, especially on high injury streets where we know fatalities will happen again
Nearly seven years in the making, the plan from the state transit agency establishes priorities for all urban bike paths on land controlled by the state — including dozens of improvements for Oakland.
