I like to have as few commercial relations as possible. Those that I have tend to have a social aspect. Sometimes, that’s a problem.
None of these companies maintain their infrastructure because it would cut into profit and when it leads to disasters for ratepayers, they hit the ratepayers, not the shareholders. They’re also running an ad campaign against lawyers right now.

In addition, speaking as one of the olds, one of the things that's largely been forgotten over time is that hippiedom was a very *white* movement. There were a lot people who would go on and on about "the coming race war" in my California childhood, and they were all hippies.

The entire point of hippydom was self-indulgence to the disregard of everyone else. Hippies were reactionaries: “back to the land, recover the ancient ways, be self-sufficient.” American Wandervogel.

Finished reading Angus Wilson's The Middle Age of Mrs Eliot today. I think I enjoyed it. It definitely gives a picture of the precarity of middle-class life in 1950s Britain. But, I can see why it's not a better-known work: it tells a number of stories that never, I think, quite come together.
