Nine years (fourteen, really) with @mariepoulin.com. I love that the only way we remember it's our anniversary is family saying "happy anniversary." How does that work? We never actually went to get the license (good thing it's Canada) 🤦♂️.

here's my non-trad banger of an okonmiyaki sauce recipe. you can make it vegetarian pretty easily with a few changes. It's ketchupy so really this is magic on many dishes.
If useful, here's my attempt to process my feelings about how I feel sadly kinda — or rather very — sick from all this AI fascist nonsense as an academic. 😶🌫️ I'd be pleased if even one person finds something useful because there's something to be said for processing this all together, so, um, enjoy?
Anxiety
Reasoning (and crying) my way through fascist AI-induced anxiety.

"oh, hey, what are you working on?" me, 2019: "I'm building an automation that connects our sales and enrolment pipelines." me, 2026 [pouring a salt circle around my office]: "I'm writing an essay about 'load-bearing cheese', egregores, the movie Minority Report, and cosmic eldritch horrors..."
Almost positive no one at the fire department will understand these two emojis, but I'm only here to entertain myself.
LinkedIn has a feature that logs you back in after you log out. In case you're ever wondering "what kind of product does LinkedIn build to support me, a dumbass user that uses LinkedIn."
This button is to help LinkedIn understand what AI content you don't like, not to help prevent AI slop. Clicking this button is training the system is helping train it so next time, you don't notice it is AI slop or care. Fine-tuning.
did my first silent meditation retreat this past wknd. No talking for 3 days was tough. I realize how I am constantly chirping to myself. I had only meditated max 15 mins and did some sessions of 2 hours. Fascinating stuff. Some moments of actual visual thinking in my normally aphantasiastic mind.
I hiked 20k over a few days this past weekend. 5 minutes from home, exhausted, I realized i had dropped my jacket. nooo! I decided, "I'll retrace my steps for 30 minutes and if i don't find it I'm done." It appears at literally 30 minutes.
I don't worry at all about terminator stuff, I worry quite a lot about Augmented authoritarianism, and I worry the most of all about a gigantic metastasizing perpetually low-trust neomedieval pile of shit that AI greatly exacerbates and possibly locks in for good.
real talk, how many of y’all are genuinely concerned about super intelligent AI ushering in the end of days?
say what you will about AI, always-on voice recording and auto dictation has been a game changer for my workflows. Save post and close app. Yeah Footlong meatball sub on white. No veggies. Don't toast it. Ranch and barbecue sauce. Yeah, ranch and bargecue sauce. More. More. Little more please
welp, here we go. haven't been fully offline for a weekend in almost a year (last time was a breathwork retreat). of course last night i discovered something really interesting to hyperfocus on and, well, sucks to be my body right now. see ya tuesday.
signed up to do my first silent retreat in july. very much looking forward to it. restarted a meditation practice in earnest recently as well. much too loud lately.
well, my second oura ring is bricked (first was replaced when also bricked) and I've vowed to never buy another vendor-locked surveillance device again so back to human interoception for me again. ✌️

Every human is predominately a consumer, but also a creator. Labour is a creative act, and every act of creation is built upon layers of consumption. A beautiful meal exists for barely any time, yet represents the collective effort of uncountable humans. Love the 日本語 for honouring this: いただきます。
it’s so easy to say “create more than you consume” but if everyone is a creator, then who is going to consume what you create?
welp, that's that song in my head for the next three months
My neck, my neck, my neck and my neck
something i think about often is how doing anything genuinely hard takes a lot of concentration which entails insulation from distractions like oh i dunno having to toe the playing-make-believe-at-gunpoint party line like fascism truly is a tax on capability to solve hard problems
an idea's been rolling around in my head about how what we lose with assuming everyone wants "answers" & not search results is similar to what we lose when "route" is the only kind of map we encounter I won't get the academic terms right, but it's some version of skipping an essential abstraction
I am losing my mind. Chat isn’t a search engine. this isn’t normal. framing it as normative is slimy. Tone, vibes all bad.
but, mommy dot ai, how will we exploit the commons if we can't enclose iiiiit? huff! Amazing that we are on the cusp of achieving sentient super intelligence and also cannot even imagine how else we might distribute ownership of the technology necessary to deliver ASI. A fun (stupid) paradox.

We don’t need education about ethical *use* of AI; we need more education in how it is being *used on* and against us. 2/n

I've been listening to TGS again, especially the series on "How to Think About the Future." The difference between forecasting and scenario thinking in complexity was a helpful distinction, especially for this long-time anxiety-haver.
