A paper is not just its underlying data but also the narrative the authors have decided to use. How authors interpret and explain their results is important. Different readers can then read and interpret differently, but that initial narrative is relevant.

Here is a question to ponder: If you could construct a terrestrial ecosystem from scratch, for example for use on another planet, as an enclosed system containing plants and a soil-like substrate: would you include plant pathogens or pathogens in general? Why or why not?
