So many devastating lines in this piece. chicagomaroon.com/52978/viewpo... E.g. Using AI to prepare teaching materials, write emails to students, etc. is like “... rolling the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile into a Michelin-starred restaurant and charging the same price.“ 🌭 🌭 🌭
Excellent op-ed from our own Mark Levin on UChicago's deal with Anthropic:

wait, is this actually an arrogant group of analytic philosophers comparing disciplines like women's studies to astrology?? i would say "unbelievable" but well
This year, UChicago launched a crackdown on teaching at a sub-unit where there is no faculty governance, the Lab School, asserting its prerogative to regulate expression of teachers, justified by the Kalven Report. At every step it has insisted this is only germane to Lab.
Thank you to all who came out yesterday to our two(!) demonstrations in defense of freedom to teach and learn
The university administration has begun an ideological crackdown in the vein of "divisive concepts" laws at the unit with the weakest governance and academic freedom protections—the Lab School. Read our full statement here: www.uchicagoaaup.org/statements/l...

"When institutional self-preservation replaces moral leadership, universities abandon their core mission. This is a striking abdication of responsibility — particularly from leaders entrusted with educating the next generation of citizens."
Opinion | Universities are sending Trump a dangerous message
Higher education is under attack. Drop the appeasement.

ICE told nurses this Minneapolis man “purposefully ran headfirst into a brick wall.” What actually happened is that they pulled him from a car, beat him so viciously with a steel baton that he had 8 skull fractures, 5 life-threatening brain hemorrhages, and couldn’t remember he had a daughter.
We reiterate our demand, alongside our siblings in GSU-UE, @nationalnurses.bsky.social, Faculty Forward, and the Lab School Faculty Association, that the University of Chicago act immediately to exclude ICE and CBP from all buildings without a judicial warrant.
Thanks to everyone who participated in the discussion of the appointment of John Kirby to run the Institute of Politics. It’s rare to have so many faculty and students talking honestly about their concerns together. And thanks to @peterbeinart.bsky.social for joining us!
Please join us next week at UChicago for a conversation with @peterbeinart.bsky.social, @emanabdelhadi.bsky.social, and @gabrielwinant.bsky.social
egregious choice akin to when Yale university hired the architect of Bush admin's "enhanced interrogation techniques," a decision for which they later apologized. it's still possible for U Chicago to amend this grave lapse of judgment, you can reach out here: docs.google.com/document/d/1...

The appointment of John Kirby to direct the Institute of Politics is shocking and disgraceful. Kirby misled the public systematically over a long period, over grave matters of life and death. He has no place in an institution committed to truthful inquiry or a democratic public sphere.

The Trump admin’s offer to give preferential treatment to institutions that toe the party line reeks of bribery in exchange for allegiance to a partisan ideological agenda. This is corruption. Adherence to ‘loyalty oaths’ would usher in a new era of thought policing in American higher education.
