#FirstBirdOfMyDay could, in context, only have been an intrepid herring gull! An exceedingly brief glimpse of a white feathery object, the size of gull, which disappeared as soon as I became aware of it, possibly from physical contact with the apex of a single storey rear extension.

Walker, muso, reader, bird lover, gardener, nanna, survivor - aren’t we all.
Last night I sensibly read a few chapters before turning the light out. Tonight I’ve put in about 2.5 hours because I just had to finish it. Now I can 😴
youtu.be/YDNRF1nZO3E?... I’m feeling rather devastated by the news this morning. Farewell Glen Hansard.

First bird of my day: the gentle cooing of a wood pigeon somewhere out of sight. My eyes stare at the rain. #firstbirdofmyday #whatsyours
I’ve been standing stock still in this wood for about 10 minutes while I mess about with a photo on my phone. I look up, notice the shape, and slowly crouch down to film This has made me so happy I feel I could cry. It’s as close to magic as I hope to get.
Something to wake up to this Thursday morning…….. youtu.be/aKothnJ2-kk?...

First birds of my day: a pair of Robin, who seem to be regulars to the back garden where I'm staying!, a trio of Carrion Crow carking loudly as they flew overhead, and the gaggle of Gull (2 Yellow-Legged, 5 Lesser Black-Backed, and 6 Herring) circling noisily overhead. #FirstBirdOfMyDay #UKBirding
My first bird was a black-shouldered kite hovering in the field and being buffeted by the icy wind as we walked past this morning. #Firstbirdofmyday #Whatsyours
Black-shouldered kite article on Wikipedia has had a quick visit so far from me to envisage FBOYD. I will be studying the information on the natural history of this species soon. 😄
#FirstBirdOfMyDay: Mississippi kite, soaring silently across the pre-dawn sky
I've read all my library books and went back to my bookcase - re-reading one of my very favourite books from Robert MacFarlane. #Booksky #BskyBookClub
If you’re looking for a Sam Neill tribute watch this evening, can I recommend this gorgeous film and performance?
Dreamy indeed … What a scene :-) Here , well the gull choir decided 03:00 was a more suitable time for a full rendition of “I do like to be beside the seaside” … fair play it stifling in the midday sun and no good for the syrinx !
First bird of my day: wood pigeons sashaying on the road while swifts scream overhead. Now Greenfinches are slurring in the wood and skylarks are singing high up in the golden dawn. #firstbirdofmyday #whatsyours
A blue gum from this morning’s walk. A tree to make you stop and pay attention. #trees #nature #thicktrunktuesday #treeoftheday
First bird of my day: screaming swifts whizzing around my head, helter skelter above the village making me want to run after them fast enough to take flight. #firstbirdofmyday #whatsyours

First bird of my day: just under 2 hours ago, all the rooks gathered in the sky and moved to the fields for sunrise. #firstbirdofmyday #whatsyours
It’s Swift Awareness Week! Sadly, the iconic Swift (Apus apus) dropped in numbers across the UK by over two thirds between 1995 and 2024. Find out more about this aerobatic species on our BirdFacts pages: www.bto.org/learn/about-... @btobirds.bsky.social @jncc.bsky.social @rspbscience.bsky.social

For a long time, scientists thought water simply rose up through the trunk. But researchers have discovered something astonishing: trees contract and expand, pumping water like a slow-beating heart—except that this pulse beats roughly every two hours.
Ranking Member @peters.senate.gov led the entire Democratic caucus to oppose the President's attempt to hijack USPS. The Postal Service has one mission: to deliver mail to millions of Americans reliably and affordably — not to act as an election administration agency.
When I first spotted this butterfly a couple of hours ago, the first thing I had to do was stop my hands shaking. It's one of the rarest butterflies in France, a vanishing species in much of Europe. It's the mountain Apollo (Parnassius Apollo). Just in time for #InsectThursday #lepidoptera
