Safe streets & Transit. People need somewhere to sleep and the sidewalk isn’t it. Believer that better more livable cities are possible. Let's stop letting perfection get in the way of progress. Anon here but happy to chat/meet up IRL Hartford, CT

Advocates in CT spent over a decade trying to get automated enforcement to reduce speeding and redlight running with tremendous oversight over the program to only have police depts with NO oversight dropping flock cameras everywhere. WTF.

Road projects are so insanely expensive, a single intersection in New Britain CT to "straighten" out a "Z" intersection (two main roads hit a diagonal road near but not across from each other) Total cost is nearly TWENTY MILLION DOLLARS

NB receives $14.7M to redesign intersection

NEW BRITAIN — A busy East Side intersection known for traffic backups and crashes will be redesigned after the city received a $14.7 million federal grant to improve safety, traffic

This isn't just something Nolan is saying. If you look back at early zoning history and what the champions were saying, they were incredibly explicit This from West Hartford, CT. The first community in CT to have zoning

Long passage in which the champion of zoning in West Hartford states explicitly that the purpose of larger lot zoning is to make it uneconomic to build dense housingTable with five zones and linking intended use to minimum land required per family housed

There is really no reason for minimum lot sizes, except to make it illegal to build starter homes, block housing, and raise costs; state regulations already cover well and septic concerns in these places.

Proud to receive the endorsement of the Sierra Club! We need a governor who will treat climate change with the urgency it demands—not just setting targets, but actually delivering results.

Totally agree with this take: Perfect example of stated preferences vs. revealed preferences. It is a great concept that guides how I see the world esp w/r/t urbanism, housing, and safe streets. I'd take it a step further and point to a "valley of death" effect 1/2

I think my most genuinely unpopular take is that a widely held and genuine consumer preference for cheaper, lower-quality goods, not private equity, is driving the decline in quality of consumer goods like clothing and housewares.

This article is all about parking but gives an update on the London direct flight quest. It is pretty remarkable all the push to have a London flight without a similar push for a flight to the West Coast, any city on the west coast I wish we cared about local non-flight direct links too

The project also is a sign of the airport’s aspirations to raise its profile among mid-size airports in the region with further route expansion.

Why is everything at Hartford Union Station always set up as though no one considered that it might be used? Like, the one stairway from the station to the platform is blocked off with construction barricades, with no sign to indicate how to get up. Up on the platform, that staircase isn't blocked.

Even today there are huge, well funded efforts by wealthy elites to fragment US cities even further than they already are, e.g. to split Buckhead off from Atlanta or La Jolla from San Diego. No one seems to really care on the other side, and there's no countervailing force for consolidation.

NYC has both a very powerful executive and a frankly enormous amount of fiscal capacity relative to any other city or even most state governorships. I think more blue state Dems should think about ways to concentrate power and expand their jurisdictions fiscal capacity!

If you're involved in the rapid roll-out of bicycle urbanism in YOUR city, @modacitylife.com clear, concise🧵 of how Beijing moved from a bike mode share of 9.5% in 2015 to 30% of all trips by bike now is a must-read. Every local culture, climate, and fossil-lite economy depends on rapid action NOW.

Beijing’s bicycle comeback might be one of the world's most significant urban cycling revivals. After decades of decline, its mode share has climbed back to almost 30%, supported by over 3,200 kilometres of infrastructure, extensive bike-sharing systems, and an ambitious program of street redesign.🧵

A variety of people of all ages and abilities ride bikes and e-bikes on dedicated and separated infrastructure lined with trees and buildings on the streets of Beijing.
