a $20 boot lasts a month but a $200 boot lasts 50 years but the company that makes the $200 boot got bought out by private equity and changed factories to the same one that makes the $20 boot so now it only lasts a year but another company bought the original factory and is selling boots for $400

"people long for cheap disposable things" or buying goods has become a crapshoot of quality and people are focusing on the only signals that are reliable: price and social signals

Had the privilege of being a tester for big walk and I can corroborate that it’s an amazing, special game. A “play together with your friends” game made with tremendous thought and care and authenticity, so well crafted it ruined other co-op games for me. Get a group together, you won’t regret it!

Kamaitachi no Yoru is simply one of the most important Japanese games in history, period. In the historical trajectory of novel games, if Otogirisou, Chunsoft's previous gane, is Pac-Land, this is Super Mario Brothers. It is that foundational in the storytelling and design paradigms it codified.

I'm trembling while writing this: Kamaitachi no yoru—not the PC remake, not the iOS port, but the actual original SFC version—has been translated at last by ButThouMust, who graciously brought us an English patch for Otogirisou in the past. This is HISTORICAL.

That's not to say you should shy away from constructive criticism. My point is that when evaluating a loc as a monolingual player, what's helpful for us is when you frame it in terms of your experience. "The loc did this and it was good/bad because it caused ___" shines a light we still rarely get.

I think it also revealed just how quickly a bunch of otherwise very hard problems can be to solve with global collective action. The fuckin Ganga was running clear water for the only time in my lifetime because for 2 weeks nobody threw garbage in it. The canals in Venice had fish.

Covid lockdowns demonstrated, in a deeply imperfect way, the possibility of large-scale social solidarity for a higher cause. That is a prime reason why so many powerful people want us to run screaming away from them into the comforting arms of selfish individualist competition.

I truly feel for kids growing up now who will have to unlearn using AI, but if you've been writing for more than 2 years it is the easiest thing in the world to just Keep Doing The Thing You Did and ignore AI tools!! It makes me feel crazy that people act like this isn't the case!!!

it's actually sad as hell to use AI for research when research is the fun part. you can just email people and call them on the phone and ask them questions about the thing that they have expertise in. you can read documents & learn cool shit. ok now i'm just talking about how being a reporter is fun

I saw a post saying that any critic would get a backlash after trashing a popular film. And I'm just not sure that should be normal. It's fun when a critic hates something! We should want reviewers with high standards and weird/obtuse opinions. A film isn't a sports team you support!

I wrote about the Nolan Odyssey for the LRB. I'll summarize some of my main points below, in case you don't feel like reading all that. www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

pardon me for crossposting but someone on tumblr asked about theatre in the mosaic so i had to mention that lia is an aspiring playwright

yes, loic's daughter is a drama kid. but how could she be anything else. waking up in her hospital bed like "i'm PASTpatientlywaitingi'm PASSionatelySMASHineveryexpectationevery ACTion'sanACTofcreation" and triggering the pulse 2

been thinking about this after playing umurangi generation, a game with obvious influence from JPN media but that digests and uses that influence to create something unique and fresh -- i incorrectly called the aesthetic of its world "eurotrash" at first but after doing more reading abt the game
