A week and a half ago there was a small crash between a bus and (I think) a semi trailer. Half the bus concertina, ripped open and rippled. For the last week a piece has been sitting on the side of the highway. Naturally hoarder instincts told me to grab it. Formed in a fraction of a second.

A piece of aluminium with some green paint, bent and rippled as the result of the side of a bus being torn open in a crash on the Mitchell Highway on August 31. This picture is the whole piece, small at the bottom and fanning up like some kind of strange organic looking metal plant.A piece of aluminium with some green paint, bent and rippled as the result of the side of a bus being torn open in a crash on the Mitchell Highway on August 31. This piece is folded tightly like cake icing, like a vienetta, like a flake bar.

100%. in 2022, the Cloud Appreciation Society (a real thing) hired me (flight, accommodation, meals & stipend) as AiR for 2 weeks at Blachford Lake, NWT. Over that time I did an introduction to oils class for 84 of the 92 people who were there for aurora watching. It was wonderful

more places should have artists-in-residence. like there should be a residency where you live on a particular train for a month. there should be an oil rig residency, an arctic research station residency. maybe a residency at a zoo

Since everyone is talking about word games for some reason, I'll share my favorite sites for micropuzzles: - fourcorners.smol.quest by @ens0.me - hankgreen.com/fourbythree by @hankgreen.bsky.social - @puzzmo.com - @clevergoat.com - @daydashgames.bsky.social - Trainwrecklabs.com

Four Corners — Daily Word Puzzle

Four Corners is a daily category-sorting puzzle. Twelve words, four categories around the board — and four corner words that belong to two at once.

Endometriosis takes nine years to diagnose. That’s about to change. NICE has approved two tests: a saliva test reading microRNA markers, and a gut-sensor test returning results in 45 minutes, sparing women the keyhole surgery currently needed. buff.ly/QX3jHk8 #ShareGoodNewsToo

Rapid endometriosis tests to be made available on NHS in England and Wales

Saliva and gut sensor-based tests hailed as ‘gamechanger’ for millions of women who can wait years for diagnosis

Recent status: watching someone that works at Zoom take a past due security training about not taking meetings in public spaces while he was on a train going between Copenhagen and Stockholm. He completed his training then had a sales meeting about volume discounts.

A photo of a Dell laptop screen taken between two train seats. The screen has a training video with the text "You never know who's sitting next to you" showing on it. The picture taker is sitting behind the person taking the training, so it's OK.

A wholesome story for nerds: On Saturday, I was signing books at a local bookstore for Independent Bookstore Day. The store had a signing-palooza with new authors every hour; toward the end of my hour, a woman came up and asked what my book was about. "Dictionaries," I said, and she lit up. 1/n

WYSIWYVERN For when you're channeling some otherworldly magic using a computer. Alternatively: a draconic word processor. What you see is what you visually expect right now.
