Hey, if you're reading this, I'm so proud of you. I know how hard you're working and how difficult existing is, but don't let it embitter you against the possibilities of the future. I love you so much, and I know you're going to do amazing things.

The dead persist as brain scan upload shades in the computronium subterrane. Shades constitute the overwhelming majority of human minds, and must be placated as ancestral spirits by building shrine terminals that allow them to interface with the physical world above.
Everything after the 1970s never existed: it is merely a steampunk-esque thought experiment of taking technology from that time period and extrapolating it into an imagined future. In truth, the singularity happened almost immediately after the invention of the computer.
When faced with a crisis, the unconscious extended phenotype of a species population will automatically generate a hero to allow them to operate on a higher scale: a legendary general, a great prophet, et cetera. For guinea pigs, this is the capybara.
May your sleeping mind rise into the ionospheric ELVES skywave dream layer.
I have, from an early age, been fixated on the idea of sapient beings made to optimally perform a particular task and derive satisfaction from fulfilling that instrumental purpose. I can't stop writing stories about it. I ought to have been a machine rather than a human.
They should have ended The Odyssey at the lotus eating scene and released the rest of the movie seven years later.
I regret to inform everyone that they removed auto-jump from the Ocarina of Time remake and replaced it with a dedicated jump button. I for one will mourn it.

I was struggling to write a science fiction novel set in the near future because from where I'm standing the "near future" looks to be a precipice between recognizable civilization and something already science fictional (either cyberpunk or post-apocalyptic) before I even add my novum.
I think what causes the negative reaction to this is less the actual time passage (20 years is a pretty fair age for "retro") but rather that "retro" originally indicated the shift from 2D to 3D, whereas now there's no decisive technological break to give these consoles a justifyingly "retro" feel.

Things are happening in LitRPGs that the classical genre fiction mind cannot comprehend
Getting in to Georgian cuisine and realizing it's one of the most tragically ignored national food cultures in the world. A synthetic confluence of Middle Eastern and Eastern European styles that does amazing things with walnuts, grapes, and cheeses.
There are people here so radicalized against "worldbuilding" and "lore" that they reflexively disdain a book having mysteries and dramatic reveals. I know you're traumatized by Youtube analysis video essays or whatever, but you're allowed to enjoy fiction on the level of plot.
It's good practice to avoid immediately attributing an author's philosophical assertions to their personal tendencies, but when I read Lacan talking about jouissance or Bataille about the accursed share, I cannot help but think "oh, so that's how you experience being alive".
