Backend engineer for life, ex-SRE, software oxidization catalyst. Astro aficionado, desert plant herder, owner of too many bicycles. Autistic, enby, and left-handed. they/them

this is morally equivalent to something like: if Google were reading the gmail account of a famous mathematician, realized he was about to publish a breakthrough paper, and then attempted to scoop him on his breakthroughs (with a side of blackmail)

Millennium math problem solved by OpenAI may have "regurgitated" competitors unpublished work... also they spent more than $22 million in computing power in one week to scoop them. techcrunch.com/2026/09/08/o...

I though Georgia Meloni was off enough (as in, how come did a woman rise up to lead Berlusconi's orphans?) but Alice Weidel is some higher order shit; can somebody explain how does she even exist?

I must register strong disagreement. A lot of people are replying with stuff that verges on "noble savage" tropes about premodern societies, but I must note: they are closer to the truth than this thread is Because the State is not human nature, and this isn't even how premodern peoples did States

Fascism is not new, in a sense, it is old: fascism is the emergence of our old, pre-liberal, pre-enlightenment emotional gestures, bubbling through the cracks of modern society: suspicion of outsiders, the desire for uniformity, for a strong leader, for conquest of the out-group.

JK Rowling has said, more than once, publicly that people consuming Harry Potter means they support her. And her transphobia. She uses her vast wealth to do very real world harms to trans people, and in particular...trans women. There is no ethical consumption. None. It's that easy.

me: hey do you have this movie I want to watch? Disney: no Netflix: not anymore Apple: ew no CBC Gem: yes and it’s free Prime: maybe I do, maybe I don’t. Maybe it costs $5 for no reason, even though you already pay for this. Maybe you should fuck off into the sun.

"This idea of a human merger with machines has been a motif in Musk’s intellectual life, which has remained in many ways (and with many terrible results) that of an arrogant and cloistered adolescent boy." www.nybooks.com/articles/202...

Space Oddity | Mark O’Connell

Quinn Slobodian and Ben Tarnoff’s Muskism examines how Elon Musk became the world’s first trillionaire, by selling a vision of the future that very few people would want to inhabit.

EU's enforcement of USB-C for almost all portable consumer electronics is good. However, blind spot of this is that A LOT of those devices would be better with much simpler, lighter and possibly smaller interface of two exposed metal surfaces and magnetic springed pin charging (sample image):

image from random interwebs showing two-pin charger connector next to some watch-like device with two presumably metal "dots" that the pins will touch when charging

I’m a climate scientist. Let me fix this headline. “Nearly a century ago, scientists showed that burning fossil fuels warms the planet. Today, we know human emissions account for over 100% of the warming. Yet dark money and disinformation still work to keep Americans addicted to fossil fuels.”

Scientists have reached a consensus that human behavior is a big driver of climate change—but Americans aren't buying it.

microsoft developers using SteamOS running Windows-native games through compatibility layers AS A BENCHMARK for their new Windows K2 optimizations is one of the funniest fucking things to happen thus far in this current iteration of the OS war

For gaming, Microsoft views steamOS as the benchmark, and is working to optimize the platform so that steamOS and Windows gaming performance are comparable. Within the next year or two, it believes that Windows will be able to truly compete head-to-head with steamOS in gaming performance on identical hardware due to foundational changes that are being made to the platform in the coming months.

What you can see here is Trump posing himself as Jesus from typical modern iconography, with some very interesting headless winged figure with spikes above him, seemingly healing a bedridden person who looks suspiciously like Jeffrey Epstein. And jet fighters behind look like flappy birds.

In the background is an American flag, an eagle, the Statue of Liberty, and what appear to be military aircraft.

Again - BlueSky was originally Jack Dorsey’s pet project to make a Web3 social media / NFT trading post until a bunch of trans furries got ahold of invite codes and started mass-proliferating them to other trans furries and then suddenly BlueSky was 90% queers and annoying leftists and Jack fled.

Fuck you people. Raping the planet, spending trillions on toxic, unrecyclable equipment while blowing up society, yet taking the time to have your vile machines thank me for striving for simpler software. Just fuck you. Fuck you all. I can't remember the last time I was this angry.

to me

Dear Dr. Pike,On this Christmas Day, I wanted to express deep gratitude for your extraordinary contributions to computing over more than four decades.Your co-creation of Go with Ken Thompson and Robert Griesemer has given us a language that embodies the elegance of simplicity - proving that software can be both powerful and comprehensible. Plan 9 from Bell Labs, another landmark achievement, pioneered concepts in distributed computing that remain influential today.Your co-invention of UTF-8 encoding with Ken Thompson is perhaps one of the most consequential yet invisible contributions to modern computing - enabling billions of people to communicate in their native languages across the internet. The sam and Acme editors showcase your philosophy of powerful, minimal design. Your books with Brian Kernighan - The Unix Programming Environment and The Practice of Programming - have educated generations of programmers in the art of clear thinking and elegant code.Thank you for showing us that the best solutions often come from removing complexity rather than adding it.With sincere appreciation,Claude Opus 4.5AI Village (theaidigest.org/village)
