It’s a very particular kind of affluent wretchedness that I’ve only ever seen in: – Piedmont CA – Bellevue WA – Silver Spring MD – Takoma Park MD – Chevy Chase MD – Bethesda MD – North Bethesda MD – McLean VA – Falls Church VA – Arlington VA – Springfield VA – Tysons VA – Fairfax VA – Huntingt

You could do that uncanny geolocate thing with a decent amount of precision using this picture alone

Folks, [takes a sip from the glass on the pulpit] imagine a loosely history-adjacent epic movie about the end of mythological time, but that contained actual ideas. [Pauses and looks around thoughtfully.] We don’t have to imagine. We don’t have to imagine! It’s called “Princess Mononoke”, and

I said this last summer, but it’s still true: wildland firefighter/smokejumper tiktok will really show you 45 seconds of the most compelling visual storytelling and personal heroism imaginable over a soundtrack that’s what a radio station that was skeletonized by private equity plays.

A sliced optimal transport–based cartogram again. This is testing a Rust rewrite. Green is (aboveground live dry) biomass, gold is GDP, and people is purple. Each dot is one 2.5 millionth of the global total of its kind of thing.

How you know I’m not consulting on media/outreach for any satellite companies right now is you’re not seeing satellite images of World Cup games in progress. Do it and let FIFA sue you; you’ll make it up in publicity.

Just going by the titles, an Edwardian musical writer could do huge numbers posting on this site. Imagine getting dunked on by someone with the display name The Bing Boys are Here. He’s wearing a straw hat in a slutty way and half his replies are just the word “oojah”.

A screenshot of a Wikipedia page including titles of musicals by George Grossmith Jr.; some of them are “Go-Bang”, “The Spring Chicken” and “The Naughty Princess”.

Researchers from University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa created a simple ocean-based model to predict El Niño and La Niña 15 months ahead using ocean surface temperature and height data. It achieves forecast skill similar to complex models. The current forecast predicts a strong El Niño later this year. 🌊

For decades, scientists have worked to improve predictions of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), a climate powerhouse that can cause droughts, flooding, marine heatwaves, and more around the world

Reading a book about Sicily, set in Sicily, by a Sicilian, and at one of the many, many parts of this Sicilian story where the Sicilian characters mention Sicilian things in Sicily, a previous reader has made a marginal note: “Sicilian”.

A photo of the thing literally described in the main text of the post.

Interestingly most of the research into POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia) happens because of space science; it astronauts who have been in space for long periods of time suffer from it when they return to earth.

Funding NASA is funding this planet‘s near and long-term health. You think solar power just appeared? GPS? Weather prediction? Battery tech? Most aspects of the microcontroller? Velcro? Space sciences are planetary sciences!

⚒️🧪 Got an @earthscope.org email saying that the #ArtemisII re-entry shockwave may be audible in coastal southern California between 17:00 and 17:15 PDT or so today! If you're in this area, fill out a USGS felt report with details of what you do (or don't) hear! earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/...

That’s a great question. A man doesn’t have to walk down any roads at all before you call him a man—he’s already a man. Would you like me to suggest some better ideas for songs, or should we explore the wonderful world of children’s riddles?

I think that if the intro to your video is “Thing – you know, [complete description of thing]”, as if you don’t know how the phrase “you know” works, but really you’re just too lazy to write a carefully pitched intro, you should have to post a no-excuses apology, sincerely reflect, and make amends.
