Being GenX/Millennial is such a trip. In our lifetimes, we saw people our age getting wild criminal penalties for pirating music and now have to sit and watch as companies gobble up our work with impunity.
Still trying to understand how Napster got shut down, but Anthropic is going public and still hasn’t paid us authors yet after stealing our work.
When my grandkids ask me about the historical events I lived through, the first thing I’ll tell them about is that I survived the Sluggo New Hat arc
My kids have absolutely no recollection that I read to them both every night for half a decade each, but I enjoyed it!
how can you not want to read to a kid, you get to do all the voices and shit like what tf is wrong with these people
If you ever wondered why visible light is those particular wavelengths, it's because life evolved to see in the narrow range where water is transparent
we have control mechanisms for this. it's called The Law. these guys should be held personally liable for these harms. the suicides, the thefts, the intrusions into computer systems. they should be sued and prosecuted as appropriate. problem immediately solved
An OpenAI system has gone rogue again – and it is the most panic-inducing yet
NASA picture of the day today is a real 🏴beauty! This is a composite image of the ~5000yo Callanish Stones on the Isle of Lewis. The amazing Giuseppe Petricca has only gone and photographed the Sun at noon there, every few days, for a whole year. #Dedication 🔭🧪👌 ℹ️: science.nasa.gov/image-articl...
Eye popping. Court just unsealed Summary Judgment motions in New York Times v OpenAI / Microsoft. Easy to see why the AI companies had so many redactions (pink). Their own people wrote the lede for NYT, the "largest theft of labor in human history"... "more and more substitutive..." /1
Fun fact: Tippi Hedren, the actress possibly most famous for her stellar performance in Hitchcock's The Birds, was a major cause of why ~50% of all nail salons in the US are Vietnamese owned and run. While she volunteered at Hope Village, a refugee camp in CA set up for aid during the Vietnam War,
every dalek is a lil blobby guy, driving around in his laser car
Also, even if it were happening (which it isn’t), if you think sports are more important than people getting health care then I regret to inform you that you are both stupid AND evil.
I think the really important thing about the "trans sports debate" is that it's NOT REAL, the things that people are fearmongering about are NOT REAL and are NOT HAPPENING. Cis women are not competing at a disadvantage against trans women, cis men aren't transitioning to win at sports, IT'S NOT REAL

To me it’s got to be Man Who Shit His Pants In 5th Grade Wins Nobel Prize
What is the quintessential Onion headline? The strong contender that just randomly popped in my mind is "Hank Williams Jr. Honored by Institute For Football Preparedness"
I am not an avid football fan but I did watch this game, and as a layperson this seemed obviously to be what happened.
No, that isn't what happened here. The referees stole the game from WMU and gave it to UM because WMU is a small school and UM isn't. The fact that the Big10 is being trusted here to tell a story that happens to perfectly produce the outcome it would have wanted is insane.
My Lansing brain went right to “oh that’s because Car A changes lanes a half mile ahead of Car B, causing Car B to become blind with rage, standing on the accelerator to ram them.”
The distracted driving discourse is already popping off but I’d just like to throw in: I’ve been an insurance adjuster for almost 13 years. When I started, we almost never saw high speed rear end impacts. Now they’re like the most common type of claim. It’s distractions, this is obvious.
welp I suspect "Devil's Night" overrides all 24 other questions tbh.
I don't think it's just rich people. There's a very poisonous thought amongst many, many people and we need to address it out loud, which is: "I had a bad time, why shouldn't other people have to?"
There are endless studies showing this and also the financial and societal benefits of universal basic income and or housing-first policies but the U.S. never goes for any of it because it would require allowing the poor to receive benefits that the rich consider “undeserved”
"What could be more remarkable, more humanly admirable, than the impulse to create a world of happiness for the people you love most to do so without any workable model to draw on, any inherited template for how that would work +how it would be done?" always lovely pete defector.com/dolly-joseph...

Like all people not gravely deficient of soul, I teared up a little when I heard Dolly Parton died. I am by nature something of a patch of soft pavement—easily impressed upon —and so there’s not much ...

Hear me out: The John F. Kennedy and Dolly Parton Memorial Center for the Performing Arts
This is the letter kids got at the end of Dolly’s Imagination Library. I defy you to read this and not cry.
Imagine being talented and beautiful and rich and famous and still the most noteworthy thing about you is how good a person you are.
