I think my most genuinely unpopular take is that a widely held and genuine consumer preference for cheaper, lower-quality goods, not private equity, is driving the decline in quality of consumer goods like clothing and housewares.

This is also, tangentially, a response to those saying we’re already seeing the limits of adaptation. No, we’re not. We’ve barely begun to adapt. And that’s being generous. Adaptation has limits - and they’ll vary by system - but we won’t reach them until we genuinely mobilize to reduce risk.

It pains me to see adaptation used to undermine mitigation, but also to see it painted as a "false solution." Adaptation is harm reduction for climate impacts that can no longer be avoided. Climate justice demands it. AND it has limits, becoming less effective and more costly as warming proceeds.

I think it also revealed just how quickly a bunch of otherwise very hard problems can be to solve with global collective action. The fuckin Ganga was running clear water for the only time in my lifetime because for 2 weeks nobody threw garbage in it. The canals in Venice had fish.

The scientists then published a research paper demonstrating that the virus showed no signs of being engineered. This paper has not been debunked or retracted. No evidence of engineering has emerged. In the conclusion the paper says, “but it could still be a lab leak.”

Wurman’s statement is also just factually wrong. Literally every country in the world, apart from a handful of exceptions like North Korea, has vibrant civil society groups who advocate for democracy and human rights. Nobody is “culturally incapable” of constitutional self government.

We have a preprint on this (essopenarchive.org/doi/full/10....) and the more extreme you go, the more the statistical fit uncertainty matters. For precip, it’s always the most important source of uncertainty. Climate model uncertainty is relatively small compared to this and internal variability.

A possibly worthwhile point of clarification: the 'models' discussed here are statistical fits to the last ~100 years of data (from NOAA Atlas 14). This is inevitably backwards looking and will be an underestimate of current probabilities of rainfall intensity in a changing climate.
