Really engaging conversation about HOW TO WIN A TRADE WAR. Thanks for having me! Fun Fact: @deanbaker13.bsky.social was a professor at Bucknell when I was an undergraduate, many, many, many trade wars ago…

President Trump keeps predicting Cuba will collapse after he cut off its oil — but it’s still standing. Our reporter Jack Nicas visited to see how Cubans are adopting solar to offset the power shortage.

Many Americans are also angry at their White House with midterm elections approaching. Not retaliating can send a message to those voters that their higher price experience has nothing to do with Canada because we are doing nothing. #cdnpoli #cdnecon

Trump’s tariffs are not an attack on Canada’s economy. They’re an attack on America’s. We should respond accordingly. My latest for @TheHubCanada on Canada’s best response: thehub.ca/2026/07/30/... #cdnecon #cdnpoli

Very fortunate to have seen the restored shrine in January when visiting relatives (they are fine). Haven't heard if it was damaged again by yesterday's quake but glad to find this 50 min doc in the process, thank you. It is still available to show the Sun will rise again. #Kumamoto

So sure, put it back on the shelf. Let it gather dust. Let that be our message to the Americans -- along with trips not taken, companies not supported, and other forms of voluntary disengagement with their interests.

Alberta hasn't banned US alcohol imports. People here aren't buying it anyways. The debate over whether provincial governments should be banning it misses the actual point, which is that Canadians don't want to buy it in the first place. #cdnpoli

There's a lot of variation across #cdnecon in exposure to the new 50% U.S. tariffs (on August 19). Here's a preliminary estimate of the share of exports affected (based on HS6, so a slight over-estimate). BC/ON/QC most exposed. Others far less so.

Not worried if US alcohol gets back on Canadian store shelves. Stronger message if it doesn't sell anyways. Brand matters. Today's American brand and Trump are inseparable. The worse he gets, the more he drags down US foreign sales with him. #cdnpoli #cdnecon www.cbc.ca/news/world/t...

Trump's new 50% tariff to hit even CUSMA-compliant goods | CBC News

U.S. President Donald Trump is moving to impose tariffs of 50 per cent on a wide range of Canadian exports, a dramatic ramping up of his trade war against his northern neighbour.

Code has finished re-running! I get a total, across all 3 lists of about ~5.3% of annual Canadian imports into the US for US consumption (ie: not to be exported on elsewhere) using 2025 data or ~USD$20B, which will now cost US consumers up to USD$10B more if these come into effect in 30 days. 1/n

I deleted my earlier estimate after finding an error in the code. The long list (18 pages) of affected goods is equivalent to just under 5% of Canadian goods imported into the US for consumption. That's not nothing, but it's not everything. Source for USTR data: dataweb.usitc.gov/trade/search...

We're seeing more and more the consequences from those who treat life as a game that, like survival, needs to be won regardless the cost to others. It's how we all work toward and support each other in finding meaning in our lives that enriches and creates greater value in life for everyone.

#Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art, like the universe itself (for God did not need to create). It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things which give value to survival.” - #C.S.Lewis

No greater example right now than how MAGA's cling to the past is also dragging down the US & while threatening our sovereignty. It makes @maxfawcett.bsky.social statement that diversity & inclusiveness gives #Canada a high ceiling that much more persuasive. #cdnpoli
