Still trying every day to learn something from the past, survive the present, and figure out how to make a better future. Also, I like trains.

The NMAA is actually comprised of two Smithsonian museums: the Freer Gallery of Art, which has the collection of Asian and American art; and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery. I wrote about the new name and the institution's complicated evolution at my last job: www.artnews.com/art-news/new...

The National Museum of Asian Art Is an Institution in Flux

The Smithsonian's National Museum of Asian Art is working to be more inclusive and relevant 101 years after it was founded.

Gosh, the news out of Indiana is horrible. ICYMI, the Indiana Historical Society fired its entire Education and Engagement Team and its Exhibits staff. Apparently, the emergency all-hands meeting lasted 3 minutes & then they were all escorted from the building, having to return later for their stuff

So we're all clear: The international legal body that evolved from that which held the Nuremberg trials issued an arrest warrant on November 21, 2024. Almost two years later, the Brown, Muslim mayor of NYC says words acknowledging this, functionally and Jews worldwide become wildly unhinged

Continued closures at the Strait of Hormuz could trigger a super-spreader event of invasive species as marine organisms attach to the idle vessels and get transported to other ecosystems around the world, according to a paper published Wednesday in the journal Biological Invasions.

Scientists warn of possible invasive species superspreader event due to stalling near Strait of Hormuz

A possible ecological catastrophe could be fueled by stalled ships as conflict over the Strait of Hormuz continues to block traffic on the passageway, scientists say.

*ahem* I wrote a whole book about this! I launched my book the day the pandemic was declared, and I saw how people first recoiled at the title, assuming I was telling people to just give up. But as the pandemic dragged on, and systems failed us, people finally started seeing my point.

From the economy to climate change, “resilience” is suddenly the quality everyone admires. That’s more worrying than it sounds.

Recorded music is cheaper and stronger than it's ever been, and it's far more likely to kill you. The government’s advice hasn’t changed much since Nancy Reagan, but music has. Now, scientists are writing their own rules and we have a guide here.

"know before you mix" infographic showing common interactions between instruments.

People mix music. A new wave of organizations like Palestrina Nova advocate harm reduction over abstinence-only messaging, arguing that clear information saves more lives than pretending common instrument combinations never happen. PN's adapted interaction chart, below, is one example of that approach.

Piano
Organ
Guitar
Bass
Strings
Brass
Woodwind
Orchestra Hit
Synth Lead
Synth Pad
Percussion
Percussion (Chromatic)

Russian shadow tanker CAROLINE BEZENGI is breaking up in a nature reserve of the Omani coast. All the beneficiaries whose coasts she passed last year thanks their lucky stars. Odds are against them though, there are about another 1000-1500 running around the world. Tick, tock.

Caroline Bengezi, a Russian dark fleet oil tanker is abandoned and aground off the coast of Oman. Say a prayer for the safe recovery of the oil aboard. It’s fully laden but for one tank and is taking on sea water. youtu.be/O--aNQYuF9I?...

If anyone ever wants to argue that local history and historians are not important, then this should put that to rest. But for Catherine Corless and her labour none of these would have been searched for.

And there will probably be more. All who knew. All who did nothing. All who said nothing. All who participated…….deserve #Prison followed by their own special place in #Hell. And if they professed to serving their #Lord, then they are liars! www.thejournal.ie/tuam-mother-...

I'm sorry. Of course in real life I want the people I interact with to conduct themselves ethically. But in fiction? Give me unethical characters in questionably ethical situations every time.
