How will a pedestrianized Granville Street during the #WorldCup quickly evolve into a successful people-place EVERY day? This week I’ve started advising the very impressive @downtownvan.bsky.social leadership team planning the 7 week extension directed by City Council last Thursday. Challenging!

I’m moving a motion to do that this week. So that communities have options despite cuts to cooling kits.

So what can we do to better prepare these neighbourhoods for dangerous heat? Increase tree canopy cover in the long term, yes. But temporarily, we can support communities in installing temporary canopies for shade!

Did you know East and South Vancouver have less tree canopy than the rest of Vancouver? And why does it matter? Shade in urban areas is one of the most effective ways to reduce the impacts of dangerous heat.

Currently, only half of Vancouver families in need of childcare can access it near their homes. The current rate of childcare centre development is simply insufficient to close this deficit quickly enough. That’s why I’m moving a motion to accelerate the development of childcare centres in our city!
