It takes time to get over a leader gaslighting you into feeling like you’re overreacting. Then you start collecting data showing dozens of crashes a year, multiple involving peds/bicyclists, and being on-scene at horrific ones and you realize the leaders are just not working with objective reality.

You can't buy happiness, but you can buy two e-cargo bikes for a fraction of the cost of a family SUV and that's pretty life enhancing.
No one tells you that street safety activism is largely saying “it’s neat when kids are safer” and being met with an entire leadership class telling you “yeah but have you considered the thorny issues like ‘where will I park my car’ and ‘what if I want to drive fast’ and ‘fuck off loser’”.

Biked 1 mile to coffee. Then biked another mile to the pharmacy. Then biked 1 mile home. 95% on protected (separated) bike infra. More Americans deserve the freedom of a life like this (if they want it).

Here is my latest estimate of where both years will end up compared to global temperatures since 1850.

We were in Paris last year and I was struck by how much nicer it was than when I lived there many years ago. My memories of old Paris include endless honking, traffic jams, fumes, and frustration. Paris by bike last year was really fun.

Lol, it's "extreme" to not drive a giant SUV around to the grocery store and to drop your kids off at school. Anyway, this is a great reminder that e-bikes are an incredibly powerful tool for replacing car trips. People aren't going from acoustic to e-bike, they're going from car to e-bike.

Fietser@americanfietser.bsky.social · 2w agoA motorist in Amsterdam was pulled over for being a public noise nuisance with his car. Noise measurement tests were done and the car was found to be in violation. The driver had to continue his journey on foot and the car is not allowed on public infrastructure until the exhaust is properly muffled
We did a “CT Road Nerds” tour of Hoboken in 2024, and this was also my biggest takeaway. They did great work with bulb outs, bollards/flexposts, and daylighting, but they also didn’t have to remediate the worst 4-5 lane stroads. Anywhere w/a ton of those has its work cut out for them.

The demographic reality is inescapable: We are going to have millions more older drivers with diminishing capabilities, in cars that are too big and too dangerous for everyone around them, with few satisfactory alternatives to driving. It will not end well.
How will we live when we reach the end of our drivespan?
Our cities and suburbs are not designed to cope with the demographic time bomb.

We got our first e cargo bike to replace our second car. Now we use our bikes so often that our remaining car sits, sometimes for entire weeks at a time. This is for a family of 4 with 2 young kids. We go places every day. We rarely need to go by car.
Laura G Mitchell@lauragmitchell.com · 3w agoThe other day someone told me I'm a bad influence (re: their bank account 😆) when I answered "YES" to their question: "Did getting an e cargo bike really allow you to replace as many car trips as it seems from your posts on Bluesky?" Ebikes and ecargo bikes are car replacers.
Important context found in other reporting: this is the 2nd time the BWCA was closed due to fire, both in last 5 years. Almost as if something is changing…🤔

It’s more “manly” to carry your entire family around in a cargo bike powered only by your watermelon-shaped quads. Even more “manly” if you don’t let “weather” cause you to give up and drive your living room around instead.

This is the original 'fietsstraat' in Amsterdam In 2016, the City of Amsterdam was interested in starting a pilot with a different road profile. This resulted in a new type of bicycle street for Amsterdam. In line with other bicycle streets, cyclists have priority over cars (cars are guests).
