Please stop saying “lockdowns.” There were never true lockdowns in the US, and it fuels far right narratives to repeat this inaccurate statement. You can say closures, you can say restrictions, or better, you can say public health measures which saved many lives.

People still complain about “lockdowns” but we had none in the US. We had stay-at-home orders, where although businesses were closed, you could still go outside whenever you wanted. Other countries had far stricter rules, and yet have been much more accepting of them as they saved many more lives.

Why do I mask? Yes, it's because I have an immune system issue and need to avoid Covid. But the real reason is 6 years of empirical data. I don't get sick anymore! I used to be sick multiple times a year. Missed several once-in-a-lifetime events I still regret. Mask means not sick? Gimme mask.

I work at the airport. I'm one of a dozen people i see mask regularly, out of hundreds. Those hundreds? They're complaining constantly about being sick. About making their family and friends sick. And they just accept that as a thing that'll happen. Like there's nothing to be done.

Trust, I’d argue, is the most important thing we have as scinece communicators. People come to us because they trust that *we* have done the work to figure out what is true and what isn’t and we can explain it to them. Once that trust is broken, it’s really hard to get it back.

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

An aircraft passenger oxygen mask: a drop down passenger mask with air bag and yellow plastic mouth and nose cover, oxygen tube has been cut; Demonstration model used by flight attendant crew for passenger instruction. Has text on the side indicating that it's non-functional.

am i allowed to talk about how weird it is that the main way liberals philantropize trans people is by donating money to liberal nonprofits for call centers that beg us not to kill ourselves, instead of directly funding our material needs which, when deprived, lead to suicidality? is that allowed?

Sorry i meant to say we need more celebrities to donate $100 million to suicide hotlines so we can call someone who will beg us not to kill ourselves when the state takes away our medication and housing, and then send the cops to our home if we say the wrong series of words. My bad.

re-watched Spotlight while doing my mindless data tasks today / unfortunately the dream of good journalism that matters is still really compelling.

haven't stopped working all summer / time to relax by riding my bike for a week straight and thinking constantly about how to reduce my gear/supply weight in the leadup.

I'm not pedantic enough to deeply critique the Odyssey film but I have a huge complaint: the arrow trick was way cooler (for a MOVIE TOO) if you go with the general interpretation that the arrow is being shot through small holes in 12 consecutive axes - not 6 pairs of axes leaning together.

We were talking to a Portuguese firefighter about this. I was saying how our cork oaks don't burn and apparently they call them the "firefighters' tree" because they slow the spread. She said since the forests started being managed for firewood there are lots more fires. www.cbc.ca/news/world/h...

finally, here to read anything anyone wants to write about Christopher Nolan's engagement with female characters, which I generally think is poor even when you can argue that the Odyssey itself engages poorly with female characters (variable opinions on this).

earnestly though, while I can see a $$ reason for movie theaters running 3 hour movies with no intermission, the need to strategically dehydrate (& still be uncomfortable at the end of the movie) before entertainment is one reason I've gone to a movie theater like four times in the last five years.
