"In 2023, the [EPA] under the Biden administration proposed creating stronger cybersecurity guidelines to better safeguard the nation’s water supply from hackers... The E.P.A. rescinded the order, however, after Republican-led states and industry groups sued to block its enforcement."

Suspected Iran Cyberattacks on U.S. Water Supply Follow Years of Warnings and Neglect (Gift Article)

Federal and state officials are racing to address an assault on the nation’s water supply that they believe is the work of Iranian hackers.

Air quality. I grew up in the Los Angeles basin in the 70s and 80s and remember having to stay inside because the smog was so bad - Stage 2 smog alerts, they were called. Apparently they haven't had one of those since 1988. Haven't had a stage one smog alert since 2003.

Food, man. Food is so much better than it was in 1986. All of it. Poor-people food, restaurant food, fresh food, frozen food. Food is just a hell of a lot better.

air travel is one of those experiences that has gotten monotonically worse over my entire lifetime

question though: has *anything* in the last 40+ years genuinely gotten *better*?

like, there's *more* stuff, sure, but is any of it *better*?

About an hour ago, St. Paul police tried to come in through this entrance on the camp’s flank, which is barricaded. Rep. Finke was able to deescalate the situation, getting city workers to agree not to move in. There’s about four cop cars just chilling here now. Second picture is the barrier.

This is the highest-resolution view of the surface of the Sun. Ever. Taken by the NSF's Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope, features as small as 19 km across can be resolved. The wispy things are magnetic field boundaries formed by Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities. The island of Ireland for scale.

A swirling, complex view of yellow–orange–brown wisp-like features. The dark shape in the middle is a superposed outline of the island of Ireland to show scale.

Congrats to my friends at Racket for turning five! I'm thankful to live in the Twin Cities, which financially supports so much media, both traditional and independent. Trust me, it's not like this everywhere.

racket is five years old!!! i find that fact very hard to swallow and yet it’s true. here’s our fifth annual report to prove it. i feel very, very lucky that this is my job and my life!!!

Your little oopsie "mistakes" had me worrying for a year of my life about my partner going to jail for up to a decade based on lies likely fed to you by the top of the federal government. Show everyone what you're covering up in these emails and texts. There's a reason you don't want them released.

Boutros acknowledges 'mistakes' in 'Broadview 6' case but says sanctions, special counsel aren't needed

Chicago's top federal prosecutor noted in a court filing that his office has already dropped charges in the case, implemented “robust root-cause changes” and started the process of reviewing over 1,00...

Do not like the growing trend of job applications requiring a pre-recorded video. It allows employers to discriminate for being too brown, too fat, too old, too visibly disabled, too gender non-conforming, having an accent etc. before they see any qualifications and commit to an interview.

We had our Neighbors Night Out last night (because ACAB), and it was so damn lovely. 1) the weather was PERFECT 2) small children played games with each other 3) we all fed each other 4) we invited startled passers-by to eat with us 5) no one had much cleaning to do

El-Sayed, Lawrence and McKinney all won progressive campaigns in Michigan last night by talking about climate and clean energy like it was a kitchen-table issue — because skyrocketing energy bills and endless wildfire smoke matter to people.

Y'all, I am a person old enough to have children who vote. I am not really prepared to look at myself in 4k on the regular. Who decided video content was what we're doing now? Were they 25? Aaaaahhhh

"The survey identified perceived downward pressure and a stunning 30 point decline when asked to compare their freedom to express themselves without fear of government interference or punishment ten years ago to their expectations for ten years from now."

A new survey from @knightfoundation.org and @ssrsresearch.bsky.social reveals a disquieting decline in how free Americans feel to use the freedoms protected by the #FirstAmendment without government interference or punishment. 🧵

I have a playlist specifically of bright cheery upbeat 80s music about the end of the world or the plague years, called "oh so that's why you're all like this"!
