It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.
Well, I’ve read two very milquetoast novels by John Banville, and based on that he falls without the scope of his own definition of a real artist. Just sayin’
Does John Banville think artists have a duty to take a stance on moral issues? His stand is apparently for amorality. www.independent.ie/irish-news/s...
Every time my birthday lasts 25 hours I’m extra giddy. Hello winter time…!
Reading a very entertaining book on Bramante, and the author quoted Madonna's Material Girl to underline that the 16C architect did not see any moral value in ancient Roman architecture, yet accepted this was all the rage at the time and he just needed the money.
This Halloweentide, I reflect on Arthur Miller's The Crucible: a famous play that has shaped popular understanding of the #earlymodern witch hunt - and a work I've grown to detest. The editors picked a title that gives much away but hopefully still a good read! theconversation.com/the-crucible...
The Crucible: Arthur Miller’s morality tale was as much a reaction to his own marital failings as it was to the ‘red scare’
At the height of America’s ‘red scare’ witch-hunts, Miller, whose play makes a martyr hero of the husband, was having an affair with Marilyn Monroe.

Astronomers are wrong. How did this get through peer review, and why are journalists reporting on it?

And this is why scholars who use gAI don’t want to disclose their use of the technology. They know it’s problematic, unethical and against everything we believe in, work towards and teach, but they want the convenience and benefits of others’ labor without the labeling of AI. It’s mendacious.
If you use AI-produced writing in humanities scholarship you are dead to me. How I evaluate that kind of writing is by crossing you off my list,

I remember when it was nonnegotiable that public spaces allowed smoking.
The idea that something is now a nonnegotiable because it is widely used is absurd. I am 45. Do you have any idea how much and how often the consumer landscape has changed over the course of my life? Demand, rules, infrastructure—all of these things change.
Re the Sally Rooney news, I was looking up data on arrests under terrorism legislation the other day, and hadn't quite realised how utterly bonkers the effect of the Palestine Action prohibition had been. That big purple spike is basically all PA-related arrests.
Be a Sally, not a J.K.
Sally Rooney: To publish my work in the UK could now constitute a serious criminal offence. After a process of consultation and deliberation, and with my full agreement, my publisher Faber has therefore determined that it can no longer supply my work within the UK. www.irishtimes.com/culture/book...

The Dutch EU/Ukraine trade deal referendum -> Brexit -> US presidential elections… we’ve known about this for 10 years
Everybody knew Russia interfered in the Brexit referendum - the evidence was there - but people were too afraid of Farage’s mob to say it. So it’s good to see Burnham finally speaking the truth.
Today is World Migratory Bird Day. Please say hello to the Pfeilstorch (‘arrow stork’). In 1822 this bird was shot in the German village of Klütz. It already had a 30-inch arrow in its neck. The arrow was made of African wood, and this bird played a pivotal role in our understanding of migration.

Well what an unreal long run that was this morning in Trento along the river admiring the mountains. The passing of Chris Wickham is hard to take in. Few have made a bigger contribution to their field, with such personal warmth. He's going to be missed by a lot of people.
