This country remains undefeated in healthcare when it comes to making anyone outside of it go "wait, that is actually a thing!?" An email to start the school year off from our county:

Image from an email that says, "Dear Parents/Guardians,

Because medical costs can be expensive, Coweta County School System does provide families the opportunity to purchase student accident insurance on their student through Student Assurance Servies, Inc.

This supplemental policy would assist with your out-of-pocket medical expenses (i.e. deductible) should your student sustain an accidental injury while coverage is in effect. Also, if you do not have any insurance on your student, this would be primary for accidental injuries. There are a variety of coverage options and premiums are a one-time payment for the school year."

becoming a parent has turned out to be a great excuse to learn the entire alphabet. sometimes he’ll ask me what a letter is and i’m like well shit, bubba. let’s find out together

The McCarthy Overpass Fire is 600 acres and 15% contained. The majority of the growth occurred due to the passage of multiple outflow boundaries Wednesday evening. 95 is back open, but smoke remains dense just east of the interstate. Today’s weather will be similar.

I worked at Disney a while ago. Do you know why theme parks are so safe? Because OOSHA reps can walk the track on any ride at any time and any safety violation they see is a $10,000 fine. Each. Theme parks are not safe because the company cares. They're safe because it's cheaper to comply.

Turns out that food companies were only checking their food because the government told them to, which is exactly why we need government regulations.

I once again will hop on my soapbox - be more precise with our language around AI. Machine learning has a lot of good and even great applications. And you don't have to burn down the planet to run them. In fact, some cases even save on computational power (looking at you, weather models).

You know what this ISN'T? An LLM. Once more for the folks in the back: nearly all of the actually useful, genuinely promising things that AI can do for us have nothing to do with LLMs & planet-devouring data centers. Hope, not hype. Serving us, not serving us up to Big Tech. @sciam.bsky.social
