Our new episode of @bfworld.bsky.social takes the signing of the engrossed copy of the Declaration on August 2, 1776 as a launching off point to talk about the document as "American Scripture," as Pauline Maier described it. Mary Beth Norton joins me for a fantastic discussion. #America250

I love teaching students about the rise of steamboats in the 19c, because Americans decided to build them fast and cheap without any safeguards. And then America developed an exploding steamboat problem. That’s the pattern with genAI. Whatever benefits it holds, we’re just blowing lots of stuff up.

Opinion | I Helped Run Lululemon. The A.I. Revolution Is a Hot Mess. (Gift Article)

The A.I. revolution is stalling because companies don’t want to admit that integrating the technology is expensive and slow and requires human effort.

I wonder if students today would be less likely to lean on AI for writing assignments if schools had made sure they could touch-type (at least 60wpm) before having them submit all their assignments online. 1/🧵

I like this notetaking example. it is a good case of how gender works. Notetaking has never been about producing a transcript. It is a bureaucratic skill in the 20th c. organixarion because it is SENSEMAKING. Those women socialized to take notes? They have been doing men’s metacognition for them

Notetaking in meetings is tiny case in point - used to be some predictable social assumptions who would do it; now anyone can offer to do ”notetaking” by turning on the AI listener. Further interesting scenario is human recollection / notes (taken by habit by a person) conflict with AI summary

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful
