Yesterday was my last day as a credentialed journalist in China. I moved to Beijing in 2018. The past eight and a half years have been the longest I’ve ever lived in one city. It’s been the experience of a lifetime. 过去八年半的酸甜苦辣一下子涌上心头了

Escaped the Phoenix heat for a few days to go to Flagstaff to see Antony and Cleopatra... then ended up renting a private sauna for an hour to clear my head. It made me think about how we can handle an awful lot of pressure if we're intentional about it and can control the dosage.

The way these guys BURN through capital and I have no idea what they are spending it on (narrator: we both know what they're sepnding it on) because I'll see a massive infusion of cash, no change in editorial product, and then layoffs six months later.

There's a whole separate and also awful thing with media nonprofits laying staff off because they just can't get stable funding, beause all the media money is in people who treat it as an investment and few funders are interested in direct investment.
