Did my civic duty and voted in the state elections, today. My voting station was in the primary school I attended as a boy. At recess I used to sit among the roots of this old tree, and stare through the leaves waving in the wind, waiting for something---something!

Indelible-ink-daubed finger pointing at an old-ass tree

You kids want some fucking games? Booth 449 starting RIGHT NOW

The Plus One Exp booth setup featuring truly so many indie games

Really, *really* dislike what I'm seeing of the new Dark Sun. OG Dark Sun had some seriously cool, *very relevant* themes (life under tyranny, life after genocide, life after ecocide) + bondage glam rock Jojo-pose aura-farming. This new stuff is busy-gore + generic metal + cyberpunk (???) Urgh.

So, I got into tabletop games by hanging out at a friend's game shop. (I'd met him while clubbing.) This was a fairly typical FLGS. 40K, Friday Night Magic, a coupla V:TM tables. The core group of dudes where old uni mates. These were true-blue grognards. They used to play Napoleonics. 1/

Also: You folks trying to explain the textureless "always evil pig orc" via pointing out that TTRPGs come from wargames--- I don't get why this explains anything. Tabletop wargamers *fucking love* texture. These are the guys who make up silly backstories for each 28mm figure they have!

What's the deal with games needing monsters you can kill with no remorse? I keep seeing TTRPGs touting this in their marketing ... There was Obojima, a while back; now Deathbringer with its pig-faced orcs. I genuinely don't get this! What desire is being served here---and whose? 1/

As for why vidya doesn’t scratch that itch, it’s simple - vidya doesn’t ask them to respect the enemies. those enemies are incapable of interaction or sociality, they’re just objects and no one really disagrees with that. But rpg characters have a kind of life that cannot be so easily dismissed

LotR focused entirely on how "good guys" behave when faced with evil. His evil was not morally complex at all, but the reaction to it was. And even when the focus is on a battle and a hero plowing through a horde of orcs, it's NEVER because that hero enjoys the release of uncomplicated violence.
