The journalist congressman storyline in the new season of Silo is so annoying lol. Immediately highlights how hard it is for writers accustomed to making up a universe as they go along to navigate realism, and also puts a harsh spotlight on the trope-y elements of the show’s dialogue.

Kind of a banger of a line, as it would seem to be worse to behave amorally while having moral faculties.
I'm not qualified to judge whether such people are psychopaths. All I can say is that they behave as if they are. From today's Telegraph.
In a recent interview with Vox, Jim Clyburn - blames Black people for the Dems’ 2024 loss - blames the party’s bad reputation on “media branding” - blames incumbents losing to progressive challengers on weak candidates, not party positions - reveals he didn’t know what ChatGPT was until a month ago

Sam Altman Says Even the Power of AI Will Never Lead to a Shorter Work Week
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has some bad news: AI will never lead to a shorter work week — despite having already ushered in the singularity.

“What we need to explain to the world: Number one, we are close to creating a genie that can grant any wish. Number two, we are going to make sure that our first wishes broadly benefit humanity” - Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI — This is definitely the opposite of Anthropic’s AI kills all jobs pitch.

WSJ’s Josh Dawsey got to see unreleased footage from years of a documentarian’s inside access to Lindsey Graham. It’s filled with giddy, war-hungry stuff like this: (Gift link below)
The Democratic Iowa Caucus was key for the unknown Jimmy Carter and quite important for Obama. The Republican one -which isn't being marginalized- arguably gave us the Bush Dynasty, since GHW's 1980 win set him up to be runner-up to and VP for Reagan.

Having seen a lot of celebrities as a journalist living in NY, my overriding feeling is that it is uncanny how much of them tend to look in real life just as they do on the screen. The revelation always seems to be that there is none. The notable exception is that the camera can distort height.
Random question: what celebrity have you met in real life who was dramatically better looking than ypu thought they were based on on screen appearance?
The primaries should all happen at once. There is absolutely no reason one state should get to set the tone for everyone else. This is an asinine problem with a stupidly simple solution and the fact that we haven’t used it yet is an indictment of our entire system.
These conversations are maddeningly shallow. If you reverse the order, are you saying “brown voters don’t matter”? This crude exploitation of identitarian politics is such a dead end. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/22/u...

Kind of remarkable that what appears to be Zohran Mamdani’s most popular video ever on social media is one in which he is admitting to reneging on a campaign promise -- he pledged to arrest Netanyahu even when it was very unlikely, now he’s saying he can’t.

Also to note: this is the first time I've ever seen anyone say that the Biden administration had drafted concrete plans to reverse the Pompeo doctrine on settlements and settler goods labeling and reopen the consulate prior to its inauguration in 2021. And yet, nothing was done until Feb 2024.
This long-form article paints an extremely damning picture of Biden, but also Blinken, Sullivan, Austin, and Finer who all seem to be trying to place the blame solely on their boss.
Just not fully consciously said during an editorial meeting: “Lamine Yamal hand-shake mogged Donald Trump yesterday,” and everyone understood what I was saying. We live in dark times.
When I attended the World Cup in 2018 in Russia, my experience was very much an illustration of the efficacy of sportswashing. It was easy to get in the country, law enforcement and rules regarding public demonstrations were relaxed (local Russians bemusedly and bitterly informed me of this).
(I wrote this before Trump awkwardly insisted on standing in front of the Spanish team.)
I wrote about how Trump achieved the opposite of sportswashing with his hosting of the World Cup. He somehow managed to portray the U.S. in an exceptionally *negative* light through his actions, as a reflexively corrupt, cruel leader who cannot conceptualize organic joy. www.ms.now/opinion/trum...

Spain just set the record for fewest goals allowed by a World Cup champion while playing the most World Cup games of any World Cup champion.
Feeling vindicated in saying the semis were the real finals in terms of excitement and intrigue.
Bash’s response is a ridiculous non-sequitur and an example of how a lot of genocide denial hides behind nonsense claims that we don’t have enough information to make assessments or that the existence of multiple bad actors exculpates Israel’s human rights abuses.
