An immigration enforcement system that punishes people for the government’s own delay is a system which destroys its own legitimacy. People are being thrown in handcuffs and put in ICE detention despite having done every single thing the U.S. government asked them to do.

This couple came legally. They applied for asylum before their visas expired, wanting to do it all by the books. After six months, they applied for work permits to stay afloat, passing background checks. They worked legally and paid taxes while government delay dragged on. Then ICE came for them.

The couple quickly became key to Chicago’s nightlife, curating events and performing in some of Chicago’s most popular venues. They were getting ready for their biggest venture yet: following Karol G’s tour across the country, hosting unofficial afterparties.
But on Sunday morning, as the couple walked out of their rideshare outside of Midway Airport, they were apprehended by federal immigration agents. The two were on their way to take a flight to Washington, D.C., the first stop of the tour. They never made it through the door.
The Department of Homeland Security said it had arrested Panqueva, 26, and Paez, 27, for overstaying their visas, which both expired in 2022. But their attorney, Enrique Espinoza, said the pair had applied for asylum within the required time frame before their visas expired. The two both have asylum cases, Social Security numbers, work permits and the documents required for their ongoing legal process, Espinoza said.

The couple’s arrest outside Midway Airport aligns with what immigration attorneys across the country have observed in recent months: an increase in ICE arrests at airports of people traveling domestically with expired visas but pending immigration cases. www.chicagotribune.com/2026/08/05/c...

Not really sure how I feel about all my vacations over the past few years ending with injuries at worst and mysterious bug bites at best. Need better souvenirs.

It is 2006. I am 22. The US is mired in a costly Forever War. A predictable historic market collapse looms. I do not have health insurance. It is 2026. I am 42. The US is mired in a costly Forever War. A predictable historic market collapse looms. I do not have health insurance.

The most terrifying enshittification I've discovered has been learning that Microsoft Word documents no longer auto-save if you are not saving them to one of their own proprietary cloud services. I'm slapping control-S like it's 1999.

It's absolutely insane we've somehow let the Covid recriminations debate become like "why didn't we reopen in person schools before there was a vaccine" and not "why did none of the trump guys go to jail for stealing PPE from New York hospitals in March 2020"

Since we're doing Covid again. "Do you know what else has that kind of urgency? When an addict needs a fix. Because let me tell you something: for every alcoholic, functional or not, that I served a drink to, I served three people addicted to being served." dallas-taylor.com/2020/04/22/t...

The Customer Is Always Right

Anger is weaponized pain, and now, without service industry people to point their anger at, these pampered beasts are finding their pain again. How can they know they’re always right if they …

Not only is French magazine publishing enviably robust (rows upon rows in the train station shop), but there are multiple fun socialist magazines?! And also one written/edited by people with autism.

Socialter magazine with an illustrated cover of people lounging at the beach and the headline “why our pleasures are political”So Good magazine, with the tagline Ecology, Feminism, Solidarity, SocietyAlternatives Economiques magazine with an illustrated cover of a man lounging with the a historic cityscape in the background and the headline The Top 30 Most Livable Cities. Upper right corner: interview with Piketty. Papotin “journal atypique” with poppy illustrated French people and the headline Best of the 90s.

Constantly left astonished at Western reporting on people seeking asylum. 54 HUMAN BEINGS dead in an unbelievable tragedy at Ceuta and the media insist on leading with 'MIGRANT INVASION'. You inhumane bastards. What if they were your loved ones? When empathy gives way to hate, we're all doomed.

Awful: “Nursing homes terminated hundreds of workers, including nursing assistants, dietary aides and housekeepers, industry and union leaders said. At airports including those in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Boston, contractors terminated scores of Haitian workers, including janitors…”

Airports, nursing homes and schools brace for disruption without Haitian workers

The Department of Homeland Security alerted employers this week that it had officially ended humanitarian protections for 350,000 Haitian immigrants, triggering mass layoffs.

I feel like I'm losing my mind. The ONLY REASON most of us know Fauci's name is because, in 2020, we desperately needed a person with expertise to save us from disaster, and, lucky us, he was the right man in the right job at the right moment! But Trump wouldn't take the W. So here we are.

Aside from being rude, it’s just a dumb question. He was head of the national infectious disease institute. It’s not like he was some guy who got above his station and started giving orders with no prerogative or expertise.

In France, admiring an older woman’s style, thinking I need some more interesting glasses and a shorter haircut, and then she stands up and I see one arm is covered in tattoos of Nancy and I almost screamed.

Aghghgh! Creepy Nancy with her flat black dot eyes and her poky puff of black hair

Went to use biz class bathroom on plane and a flight attendant tried to shoo me back to coach. Ma’am, i may be a crumb-covered goblin operating on four hours of sleep, but there are only five other pax in this section —how about some situational awareness? (Another FA had to vouch for me.)
