The new March record 500 mb height for San Diego of 596 DM has exceeded the pre-2026 record by a whopping 60 DM, and will probably be above that pre-2026 record for at least 4 to 5 continuous days. And the earliest in the year that 596 DM was previously observed was June 5th, about 2.5 months later.

Additionally, some of NOAA's very high resolution convective-resolving models (designed specifically for this purpose) were the ones that best predicted this incipient disaster. Yet these very same models are on the chopping block this year with the proposed NOAA budget.
Predicting such storms is at the cutting edge of science right now, and the stakes are rising in a warming world in which they are intensifying. Yet this is precisely the kind of research that NOAA/NSF have funded in the U.S. over decades that is at imminent risk of disappearing.
Due to staffing issues, the Tucson NWS is no longer sending up a 12Z sounding. This sounding is a meteorologist's most important short-term monsoon forecasting tools. This data is also critical for the accurate weather modeling of monsoon thunderstorms. #azwx @timsteller.bsky.social
