The Left-Handed Hummingbird is great! Kate Orman takes the New Adventures to places they’ve never been, some of them very dark places (even for the NAs), in one of the most mind-expanding Who novels (not just because of the LSD).

The Scum lost its mind over it!!!! Drugs!!!!!! (They must have missed Transit and its advice on how to get rid of the taste of cum).

It's my favourite NA. The story takes you on great journey against a powerful enemy. I get swept up in it every time.

It was very exciting to have an Aussie writing for Dr Who! I remember Kate from the days she wrote letters into the local fanzine in the '80s! I recall reading this on the beach during a family camping holiday. A good book, but far from Kate's best work. 1/2

I think this is a strong start for Kate Orman but far from her best. In my opinion she reaches the upper echelon on doctor who authors with her EDA’s, but her Virgin output is still some of the best!

The very underrated Dimension Riders is tackled by @2broad2deeppod.bsky.social! I agreed with most of Jason's more positive points! I must admit, I never thought of this as the "30th anniversary" book, so was a little curious when they assessed it as such! As always a good chat!

Excellent/intriguing cover & title, an OK book in a mostly great arc. Love the Shada shout-outs/influence, the characterization of Bernice, 7 & Ace are pretty good IIRC, the story itself/supporting cast/actual writing are average at best. Very much 6/10 'cause I enjoy it despite its weaker aspects.

The Dimension Riders might be the most ‘Well, it’s not *bad*, but isn’t it a shame that…’ New Adventure Isn’t it a shame that name-checking Shada doesn’t let you off trying to be a grimdark Shada Isn’t it a shame that we’ve got a bit tired of ancient Time Lord-tie-in evils from the dawn of time

One of my favourite covers! I once colour photocopied the book cover, and made myself a bookmark! (I remember enjoying reading the book).

If you could only judge a book by its cover... Daniel Blythe does Shada, but replaces wit with laboured attempts at emotional depth. Tediously angsty, impossible to follow and a version of the Doctor that has nothing at all to like. (And don't get me started on Ace, the girl who wouldn't grow up...)

Great cover but iirc most of what is inbetween them is pretty incomprehensible. Not the worst in the range but not a classic

I had few memories from my original reading, but when I re-read it a few years ago I really enjoyed it! A solid space & time adventure, with good use of the Doctor. As I read it, I noted how many things from '90s TV it was referencing, only to realise it PRE-DATED all of them! Ahead of it's time.
