Story that keeps happening 1. Scandal breaks out involving someone with obvious bad vibes 2. Colleagues and admirers circle the wagons 3. Another revelation 4. Doubling down intensifies for some reason 5. Damning no-way-back career-wrecking revelation 6. “But how could we have known?”

I hope this guy just drives around town cheering everyone on.
“We’ve recruited a Nazi who is well qualified to teach the police about combating extremism and antisemitism” is maybe the most 2020s British politics sentence I have seen so far this decade
Things I and friends have done to calm an angry abusive man from further escalating and killing us or our children: -Smiled -Kept normal schedules in order not to trigger a fight -Appeased with kind acts (cooking, cleaning, favors) -Forced friendly tones and words
Rep. Max Miller: "My former wife has claimed that during a custody exchange at my home that day, I assaulted her…If I had assaulted her, would she have offered to cook me dinner six days later?"
okay so we actually have extremely funny footage of the serena hypothetical featuring literal serena, where all the dude perfect guys at once try to return a serve and mostly get clocked with the tennis ball

If you show up to Bluesky without following anyone, you'll be treated to a series of posts about art, music, and dogs. If you show up to X without following anyone, you'll be bombarded with right-wing conspiracies and white supremacist slop. It's weird which one is seen as a "political bubble"
it does not speak well of the American press corps that they have stood by and let their colleagues - especially women - be publicly abused by this man for a decade.
Following Rod Liddle's death I've been thinking again about the often unacknowledged privilege in being able to see the words of a demagogue as just things you disagree with rather than things that threaten people.
Certain posters are not beating the allegations that a certain type of British journalist is incapable of extending empathy to anyone other than the 50 or so colleagues they run into at dinner parties, a grace they extend to those 50 people but think minorities & the disadvantaged are unworthy of
I think it is tough for some people to just let taste be subjective if I like [THING] it's because it is Objectively Good because my opinions are FACT, therefore if you DON'T like [THING] it's because you are wrong, and actually not just wrong, but not smart enough to KNOW you're wrong

The retrospective Covid discussion generally makes me feel sad.
It is quite strange how little the actual public inquiry we're having into the UK's Covid response - the one that's publishing in-depth reports every few months - factors into the "you're not even allowed to ask these questions" complaints. We are, in fact, officially asking these questions!
Abby was the one that broke open the Max Miller story (and shame on NYT for not acknowledging that). Here is her original story: www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
Assault, misogyny, verbal threats: Records detail new allegations against Rep. Max Miller
Police reports and filings in a bitter custody dispute raise new questions about the conduct of an Ohio Republican as he campaigns for a third term.

I first got 1000+ pages of court documents from Miller & Moreno's custody case. Anybody can request these from Cuyahoga County. I reviewed those by myself, one by one—no AI involved!—and the filings pointed to police reports. I then sought those out separately and spent days combing through them.
It's pretty infuriating that Trump is denying disaster aid to Oregon for political reasons and I have barely heard anything about it, while Biden was falsely accused of doing the exact same thing to North Carolina and millions of people believed that
This is what I mean when I talk about the Fantasy of the Optional Pandemic, where the virus was erased from the equation and mitigation measures were always portrayed as an avoidable choice. Headlines about what actually happened are never even acknowledged.
There are working class and vulnerable kids who will never have the life they should have had because of school closures. Let’s address that too, shall we?
West Coast cities are caught in a doom loop where the problem keeps growing but political elites refuse to admit that solving it requires more funding. Every few years someone comes along promising to "finally" crack down, gets elected and fails to deliver. That would have been worth writing about.
🧵On @thenewsagents.co.uk yesterday, school closures and the lab leak theory were offered as two examples of legitimate questions that were hard to ask. Both have in fact been asked constantly since 2020. But here's a thread on why I think they were wrong and dangerous on school closures 1/12
So many sneering elitist journalists with snarky posts over the past months that the Reflecting Pool story was trivial. It was so trivial that the DC US Attny presented false evidence to a grand jury to indict an innocent man to please the President while they both lied about it.
The top of the US govt abusing power with even trivial things *is* the story. Federal law enforcement warped around lies and assuaging one man’s hurt feelings. The cynical, above-it-all attitude of doesn’t matter, stop being hysterical, why not humor him for a bit is part of why we’re in this mess.

Remembering how the "Ebola Crisis" was literally *the* most covered news story - consistently framed as though it was a huge embarrassment to Obama - before the 2014 midterms (after which the media totally abandoned the story)
The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has killed more than 1,500 people in just over two months, and it is spreading much faster than previous outbreaks, the nation’s health ministry reported on Thursday.

The Tate Brothers' Should Be The Trumps' Second Epstein Scandal
The truth is much worse than most people realize, and they knew a lot of it.
offmessage.net
Had the tab open for weeks but finally read the New Yorker's Tate brothers expose. Among many thoughts: that reporting ought to be an existential emergency for MAGA and the international far right, but the reaction is eerily mute due (perhaps) to the decline of reading and weak political opposition.
This is wildly irresponsible of Google - allowing people to create AI generated satellite images. Satellite imagery has always been such a useful and reliable source because it came from reliable sources, but now Google is messing with it at source. www.digitaldigging.org/p/how-to-pla...
How to plant a nuclear plant in Iran
The question is: what on earth is Google doing?

It's also very funny how they constantly cite "they covered it up!" as evidence for the lab leak when China very actively tried to cover up the market origin.
Happy 6th month anniversary to the 3 day special military operation to denuclearize Iran to all those who celebrate!
Hurling F-bombs at an 85-year-old scientist who won’t fight back doesn’t make you tough. Staying silent after your own daughter accused Rep. Max Miller of holding a gun to her head, pushing her against a wall, and fracturing your granddaughter’s collarbone makes you a coward.
Moreno to Fauci: "Who the fuck did you think you were?"
All the Fauci stuff is a modern day version of the POW/MIA stuff after Vietnam - a way to try to rewrite the history of a huge failure of conservative ideology to be instead a story about how liberals and foreigners stabbed us in the back.
Weird he can’t bring this kind of energy towards his colleague who is accused of beating up his daughter.
